🌿 One week on...

Last week we refreshed these Corten steel planters with a new planting scheme, and they're already beginning to settle in nicely.

The combination of ornamental grasses, Heuchera, Salvia and Canna provides a mix of colour, texture and structure, while the warm tones of the Corten steel create a beautiful backdrop for the planting.

One of the things we often explain to customers is that planting projects are an investment in the future. Unlike paving or fencing, planting continues to develop and improve over time.

In a few months these planters will look very different again as the grasses mature, the Salvia continues flowering and the plants begin to fill the space.

For now, we're simply enjoying the contrast between the vibrant foliage, bright flowers and the weathered steel.

What do you think of the combination? 🌿

🌿 One of the hardest things about planting projects is trusting the process.

We've recently completed the first phase of a new planting scheme on a coastal garden in Looe.

The brief was simple: create movement, texture and long-season interest on a large bank overlooking the sea.

The client selected and supplied the planting, choosing a combination of ornamental grasses including Pennisetum and Calamagrostis, interspersed with Verbena bonariensis 'Lollipop'.

Over two days, we prepared the bank, improved the planting area and installed the scheme across approximately 40m².

Right now, it may not look like much.

But that's the beauty of planting.

In just a few weeks, the grasses will begin to fill out, the Verbena will rise through the planting and the whole bank will start to soften and move in the coastal breeze.

We'll be returning in the autumn to carry out a seasonal tidy-up and add further planting to continue developing the scheme.

Sometimes the best gardens aren't created overnight, they're allowed to grow into themselves.

We can't wait to see how this one develops.

🌿 Father's Day feels particularly relevant for us this year.

Many of our customers will know that Mark is not only part of the Waterlillie Clark team, but also Luke's dad.

Working with family isn't always easy (especially when you're both convinced you're right!), but it's something we're incredibly grateful for.

Over the years, knowledge, skills and plenty of life lessons have been passed from one generation to the next, not just about gardening, but about hard work, reliability and taking pride in what you do.

Those values are still at the heart of everything we do today.

Whether you're spending today with your dad, remembering him, celebrating a grandfather, stepfather or father figure, we hope you have a wonderful Father's Day.

And if you're lucky enough to spend some time in the garden together, even better. 💚

💚 One of the things we're most proud of is the long-term relationships we build with clients.

"Luke and the team have been helping me keep my garden tidy and beautiful for over a year now... I can recommend them 100%."

Not every project is a complete garden transformation.

Sometimes the biggest difference comes from regular professional care and attention.

Whether it's grass cutting, pruning, w**ding, hedge maintenance or seasonal tidy-ups, consistent maintenance keeps gardens looking their best throughout the year.

Thank you to all of our clients who continue to trust us with their gardens.

We genuinely appreciate it.

☀️ The longest day of the year is almost here.

On 21st June, we'll reach the Summer Solstice – the day with the most daylight hours of the year.

For many people, it feels like summer is only just beginning.

For gardeners, it's a little different.

Lawns are growing at full speed.
Borders are bursting into life.
Hedges are putting on fresh growth.
And the gardens that have been carefully looked after through spring are now starting to shine.

But the Solstice is also a reminder that gardening is always looking ahead.

The planting you enjoy in July was planned months ago.

The landscaping projects completed in autumn often started as conversations during summer.

And the gardens that look their best next spring will soon be entering their autumn preparation phase.

So if you're lucky enough to have some sunshine this weekend, take a moment to enjoy your garden.

And if you're already spotting things you'd like to improve, now is the perfect time to start planning.

Happy Summer Solstice from all of us at Waterlillie Clark. 🌿

🌿 Why is my lawn growing so fast at the moment?

A week of sunshine followed by regular showers is pretty much perfect growing weather.

Across Plymouth and Saltash, we're seeing lawns put on significant growth between visits, which is great for keeping them green and healthy, but can quickly leave gardens looking untidy.

A few tips for managing rapid summer growth:

✔ Cut little and often where possible
✔ Keep mower blades sharp
✔ Avoid removing more than one-third of the grass height in a single cut
✔ Strim around edges regularly to keep things looking neat
✔ Don't forget borders and w**ds will be growing just as quickly

Summer is often the busiest time in the garden. A little regular maintenance now can save a much bigger tidy-up later.

How often have you been mowing recently? Weekly, fortnightly or just when it starts to get out of hand?

⭐ "Thanks Waterlillie for transforming our small garden into an actual usable space now!"

This is exactly why we do what we do.

When we first visited this garden, the timber retaining wall and steps were failing and the space wasn't being used to its full potential.

By replacing the retaining wall, rebuilding the access and installing a low-maintenance artificial lawn, we've helped create a garden that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

The best part?

The customer has already told us they've spent far more time outside since the project was completed.

A huge thank you for the kind review and for trusting us with your garden.

“Low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance” 🌱

This is one of the biggest misconceptions we come across.

A well-designed garden can absolutely be low maintenance, but there’s no such thing as a no maintenance garden.

Even the cleanest, simplest spaces still need looking after.

Think of it like an MOT on your car.

You can have a great car, well built and reliable, but if you never service it, never check it, and never maintain it… it will eventually start to fail.

Gardens are exactly the same.

Lawns keep growing.
Weeds don’t take time off.
Hedges need cutting.
Beds and borders need attention.

Good landscaping reduces the workload, it doesn’t eliminate it.

That’s why we design and build with maintenance in mind.

And it’s also why our gardening team plays such an important role, keeping everything ticking over, protecting the investment you’ve made, and making sure your garden continues to look as good as it should.

A low maintenance garden is achievable.

A no maintenance garden? Not quite.

If you want something that looks great and works long-term, it always comes back to the same thing:

Design it properly.
Build it properly.
Maintain it properly. 🌿

This garden wasn't complicated.

It simply needed time, effort and a clear plan.

We removed overgrown vegetation, cut everything back under control, cleared the area and created a clean blank canvas for the homeowner.

Sometimes the biggest transformation isn't a new patio or a new lawn.

Sometimes it's simply being able to enjoy your garden again.

Thinking about tackling a garden that's become a little overwhelming?

We'd be happy to help.

Most people see the finished garden.

They don't always see what goes into keeping it that way.

This past week included:

✂️ Hedge reductions
🌿 Shrub shaping
🚜 Lawn maintenance
🧹 Garden tidy-ups

No two days are ever quite the same.

It's one of the reasons we love what we do.

Every garden presents a different challenge.
