Tomorrow we say a fond farewell to Graeme Benge who is retiring after an amazing 50 years in the construction industry!

Many of you will remember him from his time at Walter Llewellyn & Sons or Westridge as well as being a key member of the team here at Hawes Construction for the last few years.

We’re pleased to be delivering a full internal refurbishment and strip-out project at Lancing College to transform an existing residential cottage into an ancillary two-form entry educational nursery facility.

The scope of works includes:
💠 Comprehensive refurbishment of both ground and first floor areas
💠 External landscaping alterations to improve functionality and accessibility
💠 Installation of a covered, ramped walkway to enhance safe and inclusive access

The site comprises a two-storey vacant cottage with a private garden, located adjacent to the existing nursery facilities which will create an exciting opportunity to expand and enhance the educational environment.

Our team recently completed works to the damaged shopfront at the Eastbourne Allotment Shop, including the installation of a shiny new galvanised roller shutter.

Investing in our team is one of the most important things we can do as a business. Continuous training not only helps us stay compliant and safe, but also ensures our team has the knowledge and confidence to carry out their work to the highest standards.

This week, members of the team attended a UKATA Asbestos Awareness course at Eastbourne Rugby Club. For some it was a valuable refresher, while for our newer team members it was an important new learning experience. It was great to see everyone fully engaged and gaining valuable knowledge around asbestos awareness and workplace safety.

A big thank you to Kentec Training for delivering the course and to our team for their positive attitude and commitment to ongoing professional development.

At Hawes Construction Group, Mental Health Awareness Week is an important opportunity to recognise the value of support, understanding, and open conversations within our industry and community.

We’re proud to share that Sarra Hawes and Lisa Pickard are both Mental Health First Aid trained, helping to create a workplace where wellbeing is taken seriously and support is always available.

We’re also proud supporters of the Southern Wellness Action Group (SWAG), championing mental health awareness and encouraging positive change across the construction industry.

In addition, Lisa is a co-founder of WomanKind, a mental health peer support group in Eastbourne dedicated to supporting and empowering women through connection, understanding, and shared experiences.

As a company we continue to promote a culture where mental health matters, conversations are encouraged, and nobody feels they have to face challenges alone.
