🌹 April is Rose Pruning Season!
Get ready for a season full of vibrant blooms with this simple 7-step guide to pruning roses the right way.
🌿 The Art of Rose Pruning: 7 Simple Steps
1. Prune in April (or as soon as frost ends)
Early spring is the perfect time — right when buds begin to swell and new growth appears. In most zones, that’s April. Wait until the last frost has passed to avoid damage.
2. Gather Your Tools
You’ll need:
Sharp bypass pruners
Long-handled loppers
Gardening gloves
Disinfectant (for tool cleaning)
3. Remove Dead or Diseased Wood
Cut away anything dry, brown, or damaged. Healthy wood will be green on the inside. Always cut back to where healthy tissue begins.
4. Cut Above Outward-Facing Buds
Snip about ¼ inch above an outward-facing bud at a 45° angle. This helps shape the rose outward and prevents water from sitting on the cut.
5. Thin the Center
Remove crowded, crossing, or rubbing branches. Aim for an open, vase-like structure to improve airflow and light.
6. Shape It Up
Prune for balance. Cut weak, spindly stems and focus energy on strong canes for better blooms.
7. Feed & Mulch
Once pruned, feed your roses with a balanced fertilizer and apply 2–3 inches of mulch. This keeps roots cool, moist, and weed-free.
