Pontyclun Community Garden

Pontyclun Community Garden Open and welcoming to all.

We're a small, but perfectly formed (and growing!) group of gardening enthusiasts, with a shared passion for the environment, healthy living and the great outdoors, based in the lovely village of Pontyclun.

We're VERY excited to announce that we are looking into taking on a couple of veg beds at one of the allotment sites in the village! It's always been our ambition to grow fruit and veg but its always been difficult without a water supply at the current site in the park. We have LIMITED spaces for new volunteers to join us at the allotment. You'll learn how to grow, be part of a lovely social group and get to take some fresh fruit and veg home with you! If you've always wanted to grow your own but don't have the time for your own plot, this is a great opportunity to give it a go.

**COMMENT BELOW AND SOMEONE WILL GET BACK TO YOU**

In other news, we're looking to improve the paths around the beds in the park, watch this space!!!

We've been a bit quiet lately as it's Winter and there is not much going on in the garden. We've seen you following and liking our page though and we're very grateful! Welcome to those who have connected with us in the last couple of months. We're likely to start up with volunteering sessions in the Spring so please keep an eye on this page and join us in helping keep the garden looking beautiful for the people of Pontyclun to enjoy.

We had a fantastic turnout for our volunteer session last Sunday, thanks to everyone who came. Huge thanks to Councillor Wayne Owen for bringing us lots of beautiful plants and getting stuck in helping to plant them. Thanks also to Men's Shed Pontyclun for their hard work!

There's not a lot we can do in the community garden at the moment with this very cold weather but our orchard definitely needed some TLC! A few of us were there last Saturday checking over the trees and doing some restorative pruning as well as taking out the 3 D's - dead, diseased or damaged. We were fortunate to have some advice from a tree pruning expert to help us decide what needed to be done! When it warms up, we'll be doing some mulching and staking. If you'd like to get involved, drop us a message!

We have had someone express concern regarding watering at the community garden during this hot weather. We aim to be as environmentally sustainable as possible but unfortunately we have not been allowed a water butt and so have had to bring water over to keep the plants alive, particularly the more recently planted ones. We only resort to this in periods of extreme or prolonged hot and dry spells. This is preferable to losing plants, which will cost a lot of money to replace. We are continuing to look into water supply options but in the meantime please do make negative comments to the wonderful volunteers who do an amazing job at keeping the garden looking good. Thank you 😊
