January induction 2025 started in CCIXR with Jim Mann, Creative Director of Lightwell design. An inspiring talk on the SmartStage demonstrating the relationship between the real and digital and how these two are now merging through TV set design and infinite architectural spaces. Thanks to for an exciting start to the new year.

[SEAGRASS]

Seagrass has been used in traditional construction practices for centuries.
Besides having breathable properties, it's rot and fire resistant, due to the salt content present in its fibers.
This organic substance can also be combined with technology or other natural materials like timber, providing a non-toxic alternative for thermal and acoustic insulation, suitable for modern carbon neutral buildings.

[MYCELIUM]

When a network of fungal strands forms a solid mass structure, it originates mycelium.
This biomaterial can be applied in a surprising range of applications in architecture but also in furniture, textiles and even skincare products.
As a non-toxic alternative to fossil fuels derivatives like petroleum, it offers good acoustic and thermal insulation and it's proven to be fire-retardant.
More of its properties are being explored but Mycelium is already a promising resource to be widely used in future installations.

[CLAY]

Clay is made from abundant earthy fine-grained minerals, owing its characteristic colour from iron oxide.
Its plasticity and adaptability offer endless design possibilities on many industries like brick or pottery, being also considered as a safe and environmentally conscious material for Passivhaus standards.
As one of the oldest building materials, clay is then capable of withstanding adverse natural conditions and the test of time.
