If your boiler is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace it with a new, more efficient model. Depending on your old boiler type and house, you could save up to £350 with a new A-rated condensing boiler – which uses less energy to produce the same amount of heat. Plus, if it’s new, you’re less likely to have any issues going into the winter season.

Use a duster to get fluff and bits that gather inside the radiator columns, hoover along door ways, but most importantly make sure if you can move your sofa away from your radiator that you do. Sofa's typically block 60% of the heat that your radiator is giving out so try to make sure that there is an air gap between them or that they are moved away.

Try not to dry on radiators - We know it's tempting!!!

Many people who dry wet clothes on their radiators notice that their room is not heating up quickly and turn up their thermostats in the mistaken belief this will heat their room up more quickly, this uses even more energy. Drying inside can also lead to damp - the water has to go somewhere!

If your boiler is having to work harder, then it's using more gas, which will result in your gas bills being higher at the end of the month.

Try an over the radiator airer, or a clothes horse near to the radiator. On dry dry windy days even if it is cold your clothes will dry outside on a line.

Check each radiator has the right setting for each room - less used rooms can be lowered or turned off. Be careful turning them off for long periods of time though as the air can become damp leading to health problems.

The NHS says: Heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F), if you can, you might prefer your living room to be slightly warmer. Remember to keep your window closed on winter nights as breathing in cold air can be bad for your health because it increases the risk of chest infections.

It goes without saying that now is the best time to get your boiler serviced before you start relying on it.
