A characteristic that places fungi in a different kingdom from plants, bacteria, and some protists is chitin in their cell walls. Fungi, like animals, are heterotrophs; they acquire their food by absorbing dissolved molecules, typically by secreting digestive enzymes into their environment. Fungi do not photosynthesize. Growth is their means of mobility, except for spores (a few of which are flagellated), which may travel through the air or water. Mushroom season is here! The Sussex Tree Company will be writing four blogs to talk about the wonders of Fungi. We will also look at the negative impact some fungi can have on trees including Ash Dieback.

Ash dieback

Ash dieback will kill around 80% of ash trees across the UK. At a cost of billions, the effects will be staggering. It will change the landscape forever and threaten many species which rely on ash.

The predicted cost of managing the diseases is high. It includes the practical expense of clearing up dead and dying trees, to the loss of its environmental services such as air purification.

How you can help

Finished 2 projects this week involving consultancy and operations, delivering to private and commercial clients: great to start with surveying, then deliver further consultancy works, (internal investigations and reports), then operational compliance with recommendations.

For our private client we removed a Chestnut with the biggest Ganoderma applanatum bracket I've seen to date, needing traffic management and a Mobile Elevated Works Platform... with all the associated administration:
