This last week has been a real rollercoaster. The cold, wet and windy weather has made getting into the garden unpleasant to say the least. Our hopes for our open weekend on the 13th & 14th have been repeated dashed with a changeable weather forecast. But today, finally, it seems like things are on the up. The Met Office is forecasting the most perfect weather we could wish for meaning that the hours of preparation will not be wasted. And a reasonably dry day yesterday meant that we completed all our jobs and the garden is ready to go. Now I turn my attention to baking! Feeling really excited for this weekend and meeting our visitors!

Just under two weeks until our open weekend and I’m fighting the urge to try and perfect EVERYTHING! I feel like the garden has passed its peak, but the reality is each week offers something new and there is still much more to come. Our visitors will not know, or care, what the garden looked like two weeks ago and I need to stop getting about it. The Claire Austin rose on the arch is just getting going,Bathsheba and Harlow Carr still have more to offer.

Our garden is open to visitors under the National Garden Scheme on the 13th & 14th June. Adults £6, children free and are dogs welcome. We take cards and cash.

Our cottage-style garden is full of roses (more than 150 at the last count 😊) and bursting with flowers chosen for pollinators and wildlife. There are sunny spots to sit and spaces to discover.

I’ll be serving our now famous cream tea at £6 each with traditional, fruity, cheesy and gluten-free options. It’s a real treat served on vintage bone china and with freshly made scones. I will also have ploughman’s lunch for £8 (meat, vegetarian and gluten-free options), homemade lemonade, elderflower cordial and a small selection of other cakes.

We’ll have a plant stall as well as selling handmade gifts for gardeners and homemade treats.

Every single penny goes to the National Garden Scheme charities.

The view from the kitchen window on a busy open day. I’m so proud to say that we’ve raised over £2100 for charity this year through our open garden events and based on the feedback we receive from visitors, inspired and delighted many. It’s such a lot of hard work to open your garden to the public, the preparation can’t be underestimated, neither can the self doubt! But the feedback you get from visitors is wonderful. Hearing their impressions and appreciation can give you a whole new perspective and an enormous sense of pride. I have to add that the support from the National Garden Schem is amazing. We’ve been so lucky! So if you’re considering opening your garden under the NGS, I’d say do it! Do what you can. Don’t doubt yourself. Find your niche and use your talents for good. You may surprise yourself with what you can achieve and the good you can do in the world 😊
