My Country Garden

My Country Garden Award winning designer and nature lover creating beautiful gardens with all year round colour across Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey & Oxon

I have always loved flowers and plants but got somewhat distracted by a career in finance for a number of years and living in London with a very small garden meant I had little chance to indulge my passion. A welcome career break to have a family, accompanied by a move to the countryside meant that I finally had the chance to develop my frustrated interest into something more focused. I started by

working on my own garden, a lovely 4 acre site on the Hampshire/Berkshire borders and soon realised that my layman’s knowledge needed expanding. I moved on to learn more about plants, planting and design through extensive self-study, hands on practical gardening, courses with the RHS and Sarah Raven and with KLC Design School. I continue to develop and expand my knowledge through constant reading and visiting local nurseries and flower shows as well as the practical lessons I learn from gardening itself. I am continually fascinated by the changes in my own garden as well as the many others I visit both home and abroad. In my own garden I have developed my own style of ‘country garden’ planting and design, which can include more formal areas, such as a rose garden; along with more relaxed areas for dining and children’s play areas. I am a passionate believer in gardens being practical and useful and has developed a kitchen garden, including a herb garden, as well as expanded on an existing old orchard. I also try to work with nature, choosing plants that are easy to plant and maintain and ones that help sustain the natural wildlife like bees and birds. I love working with people and hearing their thoughts about their own outdoor space. I set up My Country Garden Design Solutions to help people create a garden that brings you as much joy as mine does to me. Through this service I am able to offer you a variety of services from a review of your existing garden and how it could be easily enhanced and improved, through to a full redesign of your garden. However, My Country Garden as a website is much more than a garden design service. It will hopefully become a source of inspiration for you with fresh design and plant ideas, as well as a place where you can go for tips and tricks to make your garden work better for you. Additionally it will provide you with seasonal updates as to what is happening in your garden and what you could be doing now and what you can be doing with the flowers, fruit and vegetables produced by your garden. I write regularly about what I am up to and aim to let you in on a few secrets of good things and places that I find along the way, There is also an opportunity for a little retail therapy of some lovely items that I have either made or sourced that make your life a little bit more beautiful.

If your lawn is still putting on a bit of growth, it’s okay to give it a light trim during winter — just be sure the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged, as mowing in these conditions can damage the grass and compact the soil.

Try to keep foot traffic on the lawn to a minimum over winter to avoid muddy patches and thinning areas. However, gently raking to remove fallen leaves, twigs, or debris is encouraged, as this helps prevent disease and allows air and light to reach the grass.

A little care now will help your lawn bounce back healthier and greener in spring.

Think you missed bulb season? Not so fast! If the ground isn’t frozen, December is still a great time to plant:

🏡 Tulips – A spring show-stopper
🏡 Daffodils (Narcissus) – Tough and reliable
🏡 Crocus – Among the first to bloom
🏡 Hyacinths – Big scent, big impact
🏡 Snowdrops – Ideal for planting now
🏡 Alliums – Striking blooms that stand out

Plant them ASAP, tuck them into well-drained soil, and let winter do the rest.

Think your garden has nothing to offer pollinators once summer ends? Think again! Late-flowering and winter plants are a lifeline for bees, hoverflies and other pollinators when food is scarce.

🏡 Mahonia - bright yellow flowers packed with nectar
🏡 Winter-flowering heather (Erica) - long-lasting blooms from autumn to spring
🏡 Hellebores - perfect for bees
🏡 Ivy - one of the most important late nectar sources
🏡 Winter honeysuckle - subtle flowers with a strong scent
🏡 Snowdrops & crocus - early blooms that bridge winter into spring

December is a peaceful month in the garden — a time to protect, tidy, and enjoy the slower pace while setting things up for the year ahead.

Here are a few gentle jobs to focus on this month:
👩‍🌾 Protect tender plants with fleece or move pots to a sheltered spot during cold snaps.
👩‍🌾 Check stored bulbs and tubers, removing any that show signs of rot.
👩‍🌾 Keep bird feeders topped up and provide fresh water for wildlife.
👩‍🌾 Continue clearing fallen leaves and debris from paths and lawns.
👩‍🌾 Take time to plan next year’s planting and order seeds early.

The garden may be resting now, but a little care in December keeps it healthy, protected, and ready to wake up when spring arrives.

As the colder months settle in, your roses might look like they’re taking a long nap… because they are! Winter is their rest-and-reset season, and a few simple steps now will set you up for gorgeous blooms next year.

Here’s how to care for your roses through winter:

👩‍🌾 Take off any long, straggly stems to prevent wind rock. Keep it light — the big prune happens in late winter/early spring.
👩‍🌾 Remove old leaves and debris around the base to reduce overwintering pests and diseases.
👩‍🌾 Spread a layer of compost or mulch around the base (but not touching the stem). This protects roots and boosts soil health.
👩‍🌾 For newly planted or more delicate varieties, mound soil or compost around the base for extra insulation.
👩‍🌾 Roses don’t need much water in winter, but if there’s a long dry spell and the soil is bone-dry, a little drink helps prevent stress.
👩‍🌾 Avoid feeding until spring — they’re meant to be sleeping right now!

With just a bit of winter care, your roses will be ready to burst back with healthy, vibrant blooms when warmer days return.

Believe it or not, winter doesn't have to be dull in the garden. 🏡

There are lots of ways to bring colour, smell and interest into them .

Consider planting winter-flowering shrubs such as witch hazel, winter honeysuckle (pictured) , or fragrant daphne to add colour and fragrance to your outdoor space. Additionally, winter pansies and violas can be planted for a burst of colour against the frosty backdrop.

❄️ Cold Weather Tip: Water newly planted shrubs during dry spells, not when the soil is saturated or frozen and avoid waterlogging the soil. Mulch around the base of plants to retain moisture and insulate roots from the cold.

The gorgeous Viburnum x bodnantense!

This is a low-maintenance ornamental shrub that puts on a delightful display of blossoms in the winter and is great at attracting late bees and pollinators to your garden. There are a number of different varieties:

🌸 Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ (pictured) has pale, almost white, pink flowers and blooms from November to mid-April.
🌸 Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Deben’ has light pink flowers and a slightly shorter flowering time which lasts from February to April.
🌸 Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Charles Lamont’, flowers from January to April and puts on a display of pretty pink flowers.

A fabulous addition to any garden at this time of year.
