I love to sketch out designs by hand. I pick a vista and try to develop what I have in mind. Using pencil to start with allows me to think about the form and structure of the plants. It’s the areas of light and absence of light that show where the depth is and which area needs attention. Then adding a splash of colour at the end just finally helps to visualise what it might be like.

This raised bed will collar an elevated patio and adding in tall grasses such as miscanthus sinensis will blur the boundary beyond creating depth. A cornus midwinter fire will provide stunning winter interest and salvia carradonna and verbena bonariensis will attract the wildlife!

I’m never rigid or imposing with designs. They are merely talking points. Changes will happen. I want you to enjoy your garden and be involved in the process. Together we will create something beautiful and unique for you!

Please get in touch if you would like some help with a design! They also make a lovely gift!

And the sunflower competition begins. This year we have three varieties. The massive Russians once again but we are trying some claret and black magic too. Each one of my Prairiettes has chosen to name them after Gods of ancient cultures. Beau has chosen the Greeks. Ysabel has opted for the Egyptians. Felix embraces his Viking hair colour and personality with the Norse deities and Noah brings it home with the Romans. Let’s see how these do! Chalk and ladders ready.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful…

But indoors trees are delightful 😃

The Prairie Christmas Tree is up! And I have found a loving new home for this Ficus Benjamina.

Sometimes a tree is just for Christmas. Sometimes a tree is for life.

Lovely day today spending time with my customers at the plant nurseries to get a lovely selection of plants for their new borders. I’m always happy to go plant shopping!

Keeping things in pots for a while allows you to reposition them until you are totally happy!

We dig at dawn.

Today I finished an important job. Having been turned away by a number of other gardeners and landscapers as it was ‘just too small a job’ and living in supported accommodation my lovely customer has additional needs that had to be factored in to a design.

With a chronic respiratory condition she finds bending down to do gardening extremely difficult. A patch of ground that had been claimed by w**ds now has a w**d control membrane in place and blue slate compliments the blue facade of the building. Two varieties of amazing cornus really contrast against the blue with their stunning red and orange stems. We can remove sections of this over time to add in more planting.

To provide some screening from the next door neighbour I put in a raised trough planter and three fargesia ruta and as it’s Christmas (almost) I’ve added two lovely skimmia in there too. This meets three criteria. One it provides the screening requestd. Two it still allows access to a manhole cover below the planter and three; the most important, it allows my customer to pull up a chair. Sit down and plant the remaining spaces with bedding plants so she can enjoy her own garden escape.

It doesn’t matter to me if your space is only 4x2m. What matters is that you have somewhere you can escape too and I’m proud to have played a small part in that! 😃
