HOT WEATHER AND WORKING DOG SAFETY
With temperatures high today, please make sure extra care is taken with the dogs on site.
We can find shade, drink water, cool ourselves down and say when we are struggling. The dogs rely on us to notice the signs early and manage them properly.
Please make sure:
Dogs have access to fresh water at all times.
Dogs are kept in shade where possible.
Vehicles and dog cages have proper airflow.
Patrols are kept sensible and adjusted to the heat.
Dogs are checked before, during and after patrols.
Dogs are not left sitting in direct sun or in a hot vehicle/cage.
Extra attention is given after any physical work or long patrol.
Watch for signs of overheating:
Heavy panting
Excessive drooling
Weakness or wobbling
Red or pale gums
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Confusion or unusual behaviour
Collapse or seizures
If a dog shows signs of overheating:
Stop the patrol immediately.
Move the dog into shade or a cooler area.
Use cool tap water on the body, especially the neck, stomach and legs.
Use airflow if available — fan, open doors, or air conditioning.
Offer small amounts of water, but do not force the dog to drink.
Contact a vet immediately if there are any signs of heatstroke.
Do not wait to “see if it gets better”. Heatstroke can lead to organ damage, seizures and death if it is not dealt with quickly.
Dogs still need to work, but today we need to work smarter and put dog welfare first.
