It is now exactly one year since Thorlux ushered in a fresh era of emergency lighting with the launch of the compact, powerful new Firefly.

Built with a 100% recycled polycarbonate housing and a choice of five high-performance acrylic optics, using 35% less material than the old version, Firefly is a compact, powerful, and versatile emergency safety luminaire. With long-life lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries, dedicated SmartScan wireless versions, and a market-leading ten-year warranty, we were proud to say a year ago that Firefly is the next step in emergency lighting – and it has proven to be, rapidly becoming one of the best-selling Thorlux products of all time.

When discussing our carbon emissions and plans to reduce them, we must be as accurate and open as possible. If not, we risk misrepresenting the action being taken to fight climate change.

As part of FW Thorpe Group, Thorlux Lighting’s emissions are independently verified to ISO 14064-3, confirming that its Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are accurately quantified. This guarantees the validity of GHG-reduction statements from Thorlux and its sister companies.

THORLUX HISTORY 04

In January 1964, Frederick William Thorpe, founder of Thorlux Lighting, passed away.

Since founding Thorlux with his son, Ernest, in 1936, Mr Thorpe had personally overseen nearly three decades of growth, and the company had recently moved to a larger, purpose-built factory in Small Heath, Birmingham.

Mr Thorpe left behind an impressive legacy in a company that continues to prioritise quality and innovation. In the 62 years since his death, the group that carries his name, FW Thorpe Plc, has grown to encompass a global family of 11 companies, employing around 900 people. And the story is far from over…

THORLUX HISTORY 03

The 1960s were a time of change for Britain – and for Thorlux Lighting, too.

Since its founding in 1936, the company had already relocated once to cope with increasing demand.

In 1963, the year the Beatles released their first album, Thorlux moved to its third factory – this time, a larger, purpose-built facility in Birmingham’s Kings Norton area.

This expansion allowed Thorlux to introduce a raft of new products, including cast floodlights, industrial bulkheads, and luminaires for hazardous areas.

But more changes were on the horizon for the company – changes that would shape the company Thorlux Lighting is today.

Large university campuses and hospital sites are often criss-crossed with traffic routes, making safe road crossings essential.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to find crossing points marked with beacons that are old, broken, or do not emit enough light. This not only puts pedestrians and drivers at risk but also suggests that site managers and their organisations are failing to comply with BSI standards.

The Thorlux Zeblux Retrofit kit offers a straightforward, cost-effective way to upgrade existing beacon posts to modern requirements. Sustainably manufactured and boasting market-leading IP65 water ingress protection, Zeblux Retrofit is a fast and efficient way to modernise crossing points and achieve compliance with BS 8442:2022+A1:2023.

Tricor, a leading supplier of packaging materials, recently opened a new plant in Goch, Germany.

The plant operates modern, sustainable equipment for corrugated board production and processing. Here, Tricor will process 140 tons of heavy-duty corrugated board annually using state-of-the-art machinery.

The Tricor factory buildings meet stringent German low-energy standards for new buildings and surpass EU standards.

To help achieve this, Thorlux Germany was commissioned to plan and supply the complete lighting system for the 170,000 square-metre construction, using highly efficient Visio and Thoroproof LED luminaires and the wireless SmartScan lighting management system.

THORLUX HISTORY 02

Following the launch of Thorlux products in 1936, by 1939 demand had grown to the point that the company had to relocate to larger premises in Hall Green, Birmingham.

Equipment, including spinning lathes, was brought over from the original site in Small Heath. In fact, these lathes have remained with Thorlux through nine decades and several factory moves; one such machine now forms a centrepiece of the Thorlux Application Centre at our facility in Redditch.

In the late thirties, Thorlux embraced the cutting-edge lighting technology of fluorescent lamps. These days, it’s all about high-efficiency LEDs – and we don’t use the old metal spinning machines that often – but we still make our products with pride in the Midlands.
