Phoebe is with us for work experience this week and the team have enjoyed introducing her to our projects and life at the practice.

Phoebe, a former student at in Darlington, is taking a year out following her A-levels ahead of studying architecture at university next year. She said: “I have had a great time at Harris Irwin and have learnt so much. Everyone here is really friendly and supportive, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to get a taste of what it is like to see how a design evolves from an initial concept and feasibility through to a finished build.”

Ian Holme, director, added: “Phoebe has taken the step into the world of architecture in her stride and in just a few days she has immersed herself in a design task, creating an impressive scheme that responds well to the brief.”

The team enjoyed a fun-packed and inspiring day at our annual Practice Day as we celebrated our recent successes and how our key sector strengths will continue to be the cornerstone for further development and growth opportunities in the coming years.

The day was hosted at nearby , a fabulous venue with stunning interiors and quirky displays nestled in rolling countryside.
Mike Irwin, Managing Director at Harris Irwin, said: “We have had a remarkable year, and our Practice Day is just one way of expressing our huge gratitude to our staff whose commitment, drive and passion for their work is always outstanding.

“It has been a record twelve months for us in terms of built care projects, resulting in two Healthcare Design Awards and four of our designs being selected for Knight Frank’s prestigious Luxury Care Home Guide. However, it’s not all about picking up awards, there is so much more to celebrate, most notably how our staff are at the heart of everything we do.  We also acknowledge our partners and clients who continue to support us and have helped to make this such a great year.

“We are looking forward to some exciting developments in the coming months which we are confident will continue to make Harris Irwin not only a great place to work but will deliver further exceptional projects for our loyal clients and partners.”

It gave us great pleasure to welcome Carol Sherwood MCMI, Support Service Manager at Dementia Forward, to our office and present a cheque for £1,563 which was raised following our 19-mile trek across the Pennines.

Carol said: “On behalf of my colleagues and everyone we support at Dementia Forward, thank you to the team at Harris Irwin Architects for this fantastic and generous donation. Dementia Forward is a local charity, and we rely on the donations and kindness from our local communities to be able to provide our services and raise dementia awareness in Richmond. Our ethos is “local for local” this ensures every donation made to Dementia Forward is spent in North Yorkshire.”

Mike Irwin, Managing Director at Harris Irwin, added: “Over one million people across the UK are living with dementia and as much of our work focuses on care home design for those suffering with dementia, the team were keen to raise money in aid of the valuable work of Dementia Forward. We hope our donation will help to support individuals and families in North Yorkshire affected by this cruel disease.

The leading dementia charity for North Yorkshire, Dementia Forward provides support, advice and information to anybody affected by dementia.  Locally to Harris Irwin, they also deliver a day-care service for people living with dementia at Garget Walker House in Richmond.

We did it! Nine members of staff and three family members completed the challenging 19-mile trek across the Pennines to Tan Hill, Britain’s highest pub at 1,732 feet, and have raised £1,160 to support Dementia Forward. We were blessed with fine weather, although strong headwinds made the outward leg more challenging as we walked uphill into the wind. We enjoyed a well-earned drink at Tan Hill, before heading back to Bowes. The camaraderie was great throughout the day, keeping each other motivated and in high spirits despite a few of us suffering with blisters – as a badge on Jordan’s backpack said: “No pain, no gain!”

We are keeping our donation page open for another couple of days so if you would like to support the team before the page closes on Wednesday morning and help to make a difference to those living with dementia then any donations would be gratefully received. You can donate at the link in our bio!

On 31st May, staff from Harris Irwin Architects will be lacing up their hiking boots for a challenging 18-mile trek across the Pennines to Tan Hill, Britain’s highest pub, to raise vital funds to support Dementia Forward.  The leading dementia charity for North Yorkshire, Dementia Forward provides support, advice and information to anybody affected by dementia.  Locally to Harris Irwin, they also deliver a day-care service for people living with dementia at Garget House in Richmond.

As much of our work is involved in designing care homes for those suffering with dementia, we are keen to do as much as we can to not only help those living with dementia but also their partners, family, friends and carers who are supporting them.

Taking in part of the Pennine Way, the 18-mile circular moorland route will set off at Bowes, towards the village’s Norman Castle and then across Bowes Moor and Sleightholme Moor to Tan Hill. With steep climbs, thick heather and rugged terrain the challenging walk reaches the half-way point at Tan Hill, which at 1,732 feet is the highest pub in Britain.  After lunch, at the well-known pub, made famous by numerous TV ads, films and dramas (not to mention groups being snowed in for days at a time!), the team will return to Bowes via Long Causeway and Gilmonby Moor.  The trek will be tough, but the walkers will be rewarded with stunning views across the Pennines to the Durham Dales, over to Cumbria and down towards Arkengarthdale.

If you’d like to support the team and help them to make a difference to those living with dementia, then please donate at https://donate.giveasyoulive.com/fundraising/trekking-the-pennines-for-dementia-forward.  Increasingly, more of us will know someone who desperately needs this support or have friends or family who are caring for a loved one with dementia.

We are delighted to welcome Joshua-Jay, a Year 10 student from Risedale School, for a week’s work experience.

Fourteen-year-old Joshua-Jay has an avid interest in design and is already mapping out his future studies in architecture. Rob McCartney, Associate and Architect, said: “Joshua-Jay really impressed us with how much he has researched the routes into architecture, gearing his GCSE options accordingly to ensure he has the right subjects to progress at A-level to apply for university.  It has been refreshing to work with such a keen young student who has the confidence to ask questions and is eager to develop and find out more about how a design evolves and how a practice operates.”

During his week with us, Joshua-Jay has been given case studies to work on enabling him to try some of the different design software packages which he quickly found his way around.

Joshua-Jay added: “The experience has shown me what a working practice actually looks and feels like, giving me a great insight into the different roles within architecture and the paths I could take. It has been such a valuable experience to work alongside and learn from industry experts and I wish to thank everyone at Harris Irwin for making me feel so welcome. I hope that I may have the opportunity to return for some more experience when I am in Year 12.”

During National Careers’ Week, we will be focusing on the opportunities for new staff at Harris Irwin to develop and gain knowledge and experience in the field of architecture. However, the insights don’t start at the point of recruitment, we regularly welcome students from local schools and sixth form colleges for work experience placements, to allow them to get a taste of what it’s like to work in an architectural practice.

Harry Sellers, a Year 13 student at Darlington’s Queen Elizbeth Sixth Form College is hoping to study architecture after his A-levels. He is spending a week with us to find out more about working in the industry and learning about the different software packages and procedures that are used in the practice. Harry has been working alongside our recent architectural assistant appointees Alex Harris and Simon Greenan and together with Robert McCartney, associate at Harris Irwin, they visited the Dales Bike Centre, located in nearby Swaledale.
