Thank you for all your messages. It’s been difficult, stressful and sad for both families and the whole team. Your support means a lot - Fiona x

It is with the greatest of sadness, and the heaviest of hearts, that we have to announce Ravensworth Nurseries is closing with immediate effect.

What started with the sale of a few tomato plants on the side of the road - turned into a family business that we have put our hearts and souls into for the last 57 years. However the culmination of lockdown, rising bills, and the ongoing cost of living crisis means sadly we have reached the end of the line and we will be closing our doors for the last time today.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our many, many loyal customers - you have trusted us year on year to fill your gardens and homes with our plants, veg and flowers, and we are so grateful for your enduring support. We would also like to thank our amazing team. We simply could not have been in business as long as we have without all of your hard work and dedication.

We have loved every minute of this incredible journey, and we will miss you all.

With the exception of December and January, when you pull something up, you should put something back in. There are plenty of seeds that can be sown after spring. Often overlooked are varieties that can be sown now, including all leaves and brassicas. Suggestions include beetroot, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, pak choi, turnip, beans, carrots, all brassicas, and salad leaves. Flower seeds to be sown incude pansy, primrose, polyanthus, and wallflower.

When planting a perennial garden container, three things should be taken into consideration, thrillers, spillers and fillers. Thrillers are the statement plants that command attention, spillers, do just that and spill over the edges of the container and fillers, fill the gaps in between. Your container garden can include all three of these elements (thrillers, fillers, and spillers) or you may choose to plant up your container with only one type of plant. Not every container you plant needs to have a combination of different varieties. For greater interest, you should include a pot or two of a single plant. A single mature hosta in a large pot is stunning, especially when surrounded by containers of combination plants.

What a difference a week makes. From summer bedding, we've moved our thoughts to autumn colour and onto Christmas. We've started cleaning out the greenhouses, washing benches and floors, ready for the Poinsettias arriving this week. Palms, ferns, and kalanchoe cuttings arrived this morning, along with autumn trio and quartet mixes for autumn planting.

As we are a retail and wholesale plant nursery, we try to propagate as many of our plants as possible. This includes taking cuttings and sowing seeds and growing them on until they mature. This week, we have been rooting various perennials along with other plants for autumn and sowing seeds for autumn and spring planting schemes.
