I prefer it when the sun shines in summer but sometimes, when it's just rained, and you step outside, it's like the garden has been sprinkled with tiny diamonds.

First time growing this in the garden- Tulip sylvestris- the original wild tulip so very reliable and can be planted in grass/ wilder areas. It is very dainty, with nodding, pointed petals and beautifully scented flower heads in a rich buttercup yellow. The backs of the petals are veined with lime green. Plant in sun or part-shade in fertile, moist but well drained soil.

Something to look forward to later in the year- daylilies- latin name Hemerocallis. They are vigorous and easy to grow herbaceous perennials which should give you years of interest and colour. Grow them in sun or partial shade, they are great for covering the ground and are very low maintenance. The strappy lime green foliage starts emerging in early spring to be followed by trumpet shaped flowers, usually in July/ August. Hemerocallis ‘Bonanza’ has large, striking, deep yellow flowers with a maroon centre- it looks particularly good planted close to plants with silver foliage. Hemerocallis 'Stafford' has velvet red flowers and the variety 'Summerwine' is an unusual deep raspberry colour. Warning: you may develop a daylily addiction- there are just so many beautiful varieties to collect!

More winter beauties....Edgeworthia chrysantha, also known as paper bush. This shrub flowers from January to April and has clusters of highly scented soft yellow flowers held on open, bare branches. A great plant for feeding the bees early in the season.

Glorious grasses- giving an extra dimension of interest to the modern cottage garden, they come into their own in the late- summer months, adding height, texture and movement to planting schemes. As the season progresses, their flowerheads have a delicate beauty that is intensified with the first frosts and provides sculptural interest throughout the winter months. Some suggestions for ornamental grasses grown here in Derbyshire include:
Stipa gigantea- arching sprays of oat-like flowerheads which form a tall, gauzy screen floating above other perennial plants, stipa tenuissima- a low-growing grass with elegant, buff coloured seed-heads, a great complement to prairie style planting schemes, it prefers a drier soil and is eye-catching in pots and containers; Calamagrostis emodensis- weeping sprays of delicate, silvery-green flowerheads; Anemanthele lessoniana- narrow sprays of leaves which are evergreen and tinged with red or orange in summer- another good candidate for pots and containers; miscanthus cosmopolitan- spectacular arching leaves streaked with white, dramatic in flower arrangements and a good complement to white flowers or the creamy-white flowerheads of hydrangea Annabelle. Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster'- a tall, upright ornamental grass with buff coloured seed heads.

Thinking about top plants for insects in the garden, I spent a couple of hours today trying to get some good photographs. It was warm and sunny and the garden was alive with bees, hoverflies, wasps and the occasional butterfly and moth- when it's sunny, those critters move fast and are really hard to photograph well. (I thought I might use the tripod and get some more stable images but spent most of the time trying to work out how to adjust the legs and make sure the lens was pointing in the right direction- at which point, my subject had flown elsewhere.) Most favoured plants for insect landing-pads appeared to be: achillea, rudbeckia, agapanthus, liatris, cosmos and helianthus.

Bit of a dull day for photos of the garden but lots of colour and interest still.
