Getting to a World Cup semi-final doesn't happen by accident.

England made it that far, and while it wasn't the ending anyone wanted, that kind of run takes preparation, teamwork, and the ability to perform under pressure when the stakes are highest. That is something anyone in construction understands.

RDS has been backing the lads all tournament, and we're proud of every step of that run.

A ductwork system can look immaculate and still leak.

Air escapes at the joints and seams, the fans work harder, the energy bill climbs and the spaces furthest from the plant never quite get the air they were designed to receive. The only way to prove a system does what the drawings promised is to test it.

Air leakage testing under the BESA DW143 standard puts a measured pressure through completed ductwork and checks the loss against an allowable limit. It is the difference between assuming a system is tight and demonstrating it, with a result that can be recorded and handed over. A run built to hold tolerance, with properly made joints, passes first time rather than sending everyone back to chase leaks late in the programme.

Good fabrication and a clean test result are two sides of the same thing.

CITB has issued a stark warning. The construction skills gap is widening, and it is starting to bite.

Too few people coming in, demand growing faster than supply, and too many leaving the trade early. It puts real pressure on national targets like 1.5 million new homes by 2029. Specialist ductwork sits in the middle of it, because experienced fabricators and installers take years to develop and are not quickly replaced.

At RDS we have taken a different view. We have held on to and developed a strong team, and we keep investing in training and bringing people through, so standards stay consistent across job after job. The skills gap is real. How a business responds to it is a choice.

Kyle Bedford, Project Manager at 7 Millbank, takes us down to B2 basement to show the fire-rated systems RDS have installed on site.

Fire containment, smoke control, escape route protection, and building services protection, all working together as part of the building's life safety strategy. Every bracket and clamp correctly specified, and every access point traceable back to source with a simple QR code scan.

It's the kind of detail that often goes unnoticed once a ceiling goes up, but it's exactly what makes a building safe when it matters most.

Our on-site installation is only part of our works.

By the time our ductwork reaches the loading bay, it has already been designed, fabricated and quality checked in our controlled workshop. This provides a consistent high-quality product which promotes a safer, faster install. This level of quality is maintained through all ductwork we manufacture but is of particular importance a fire rated system

So when you see ductwork being installed quickly, you are not watching a fast install. You are watching the visible result of weeks of work that nobody on site ever sees.

We spent a day on site at Milbank, and rather than a quick clip we wanted to show the job properly.

The film walks through what a live ductwork install really looks like. How the team set the job up, how a brand new site gets organised so the right people, equipment and sequencing are in place from day one, and why that early footing carries the rest of the programme.

The bulk of the current work is fire rated ductwork at basement level, some of the most demanding to get right because of how closely it interfaces with the structure around it. Seeing it come together shows the coordination involved far better than a still photo could.

The office has been fully behind England this World Cup. Flags up, bunting out, and the banner taking pride of place for the final group match.

A 2-0 win over Panama on Saturday, with goals from Bellingham and Kane, sees England through to the knockouts as group winners.

Exposed ductwork is a design choice, not a saving.

When the ceiling stays open, every joint and bracket is on show from the floor below. There is no void to hide a clash, so each run has to be agreed with the other trades and set out cleanly before anything is fixed.

Get it right and the floor looks deliberate. Get it wrong and it shows the moment someone walks in.
