Things to do In March in your garden
focus on preparing for spring by cleaning, pruning, and starting to plant. Key tasks include pruning fruit trees and winter shrubs, sowing hardy vegetables (peas, onions, lettuce) directly outdoors, planting summer-flowering bulbs like lilies, and applying mulch to borders. This is also the ideal time to feed lawns, clean patios, and control pests.
Vegetable Garden & Sowing
Direct Sowing: Plant hardy seeds outdoors, including radishes, parsnips, carrots, spinach, lettuce, and broad beans.
Early Potatoes: Plant early potato varieties.
Indoor Starting: Start tomatoes, peppers, and tender herbs under glass or on a windowsill.
Preparation: Clear vegetable beds of weeds, add compost, and chop down winter green manure.
Pruning & Planting
Prune: Finish pruning apple and pear trees, winter-flowering jasmine, and ornamental shrubs like Cornus.
Plant: Plant new shrubs, roses, and hedges.
Bulbs: Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as lilies and dahlias.
Division: Divide overgrown perennials to increase plant stock.
Garden Maintenance
Lawn Care: Give the lawn its first light mow, remove moss, and apply fertilizer.
Mulch: Apply well-rotted compost or bark mulch around roses, trees, and shrubs to suppress weeds.
W**ding: Remove emerging perennial weeds early before they establish.
Clean Up: Pressure wash patios, clean greenhouse glass, and tidy garden borders.
Wildlife: Continue feeding birds, as it is the breeding season, and clean out bird boxes.
Pest Control
Slugs & Snails: Apply organic slug barriers around emerging hostas and other vulnerable perennials.
Check Trees: Ensure tree ties are not too tight and stakes are secure.
