A few photos from the nursery recently….

1. Sales shed to welcome the customer.

What a wonderful write up in the garden magazine in the May edition.
Emma Kendell has captured the essence and feel of and what we are trying to build with my Dad .charlton Mumsy and my Sister Lauren family, friends and volunteers. The photos are amazing thanks to Josh Kemp-Smith and it’s great to see how much we’ve grown since the interview last year and people have been coming see the site.

Dean teaching our new student Amelia how to prick out small seedlings into a module. She is joining us from in Rotherham for her work placement.
And there’s plenty of pricking out to do this time of year!

Three years ago it was my final week working at blessed with 3 years in the garden and 3 in the nursery!
An incredible journey that transformed my life. A place of true horticultural excellence with generosity at its core. The incredible students and staff I have met along the way. An absolute honour and privilege to have been trained and worked with Fergus Garrett of the garden and Michael Morphy of the Nursery, along with all the special people that make Dixter so Great! Words can’t describe my joy of this place and will always remain in my heart!

And my journey took me back North to Rotherham to set up Hootons Walled Nursery with my Dad in the village of Hooton Roberts. People and plants are the lessons I’ll take with me!

🌱 The benefits of buying smaller plants from a plant nursery 🌱

At this time of the year it’s great to buy smaller plants because…

- better adaptation and will establish better in your garden and soils.
- cost effective
- easier to handle and carry
- Less compost
- Better long term health

These smaller quantities of plants can be sold and are checked so they don’t get root bound in the pot. When the time is right they can then be potted at the nursery into 1.5ltr pots.

Probably not the best of omens for the nursery finding a fallen crow. But with a floral burial of hedge garlic and cow parsley where it fell we returned this beautiful bird back to the earth. With all its feathers in tact it’s ready for its next journey.

Such a great few days having these two incredible lovelies at the Nursery daniel.james.co and Ellie . We worked at together along with the great team down there. Plenty of potting and cuttings done! Great to catch up! Thanks Daniel for the stunning tulips 🌷 🌱

We’re happy to announce our Summer and Autumn behind the scenes courses available at Hootons Walled Nursery. Our May course is now fully booked but you can book others.

Monday 1st June 1-3.30pm.
Monday 6th July 1-3.30pm
Monday 3rd August 1-3.30pm
Monday 7th Sept 1-3.30pm
Monday 12th October 1-3.30pm
Take a look beyond the rope and behind the scenes with a special opportunity to see the nursery on a day when we’re not open to visitors. Gain knowledge and insight into seasonal tasks and projects within a relaxed nursery setting.
Refreshments will be available at the end of the tour.
£34.99 including refreshments and 10% off all plants on the day
