Check out this quick swap we did today. Swipe to see the difference!

The Problem:
In the first photo, you’ll see a fine mesh "bird guard." While it keeps the crows out, it’s a total no-go for solid fuel (wood or smokeless coal). The tight mesh gets clogged with soot and tar incredibly fast, which can choke your fire or—even worse—cause dangerous fumes to back up into your home.

The Solution:
We installed a dedicated Solid Fuel Cowl.

• Better Airflow: The wider cage allows smoke and gases to escape freely.

• Weather Protection: The rain cap reduces dampness in the flue.

• Built to Last: High-grade materials that can handle the intense heat of a stove.

If you’ve recently moved into a house with a fire, or haven't had your cowl checked in years, make sure to get booked in with Elkins Chimney Sweeps so that we can make sure you’re good to go.

Don't let a "quick fix" become a safety hazard! 🏠🔥

We recently came across this situation: a customer asked a company to repair their broken cowl, only to have a Gas and Oil cowl slapped right over the existing one.

We provided the correct, safe terminal for LESS than what they paid for the incorrect "fix." 💸
Why it matters:

• Safety First: Using the wrong cowl can lead to poor ventilation and dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
• Expertise Counts: We carry everything needed to ensure your terminal is fully compliant and safe.
• Value: Doing it right the first time saves you money and stress.

💡 Pro Tip:
Always consult a The National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) or HETAS trained professional. We have the specific training and knowledge to ensure your home stays warm and your family stays safe.

Don't settle for "good enough" when it comes to your chimney. Give us a shout to get sorted properly!

Don’t risk becoming a chimney fire statistic this winter! ❄️

Getting your chimney swept is important, but also acting safely as a stove owner. Like keeping your firewood a safe distance from your stove or open fireplace. It can be tempting to pile them close for ease of access but don't take the risk. ⛔🔥

We are reminding people to clean their chimney regularly after crews tackled a chimney fire in south Staffordshire.

Crews were called at 7.45pm on Sunday 30 November to a house off Straight Mile following reports of a fire.

One appliance attended the scene and found a chimney well alight.

Thankfully, nobody was reported injured.

Crew Manager Mathew Lewis said: “As the weather gets colder, residents might be considering lighting the fire.

“We strongly recommend that chimneys are cleaned regularly to help prevent fires.

“Burning materials such as wood should also be kept away from the fire and always keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.”

I’m often told “I don’t need our other fire sweeping this time, we haven’t used it much!”

Today I cleared a wasps nest that had been made inside a chimney flue over the summer months. Had this customer tried to light a fire in their little used fireplace, there would have been problems!

Like an MOT on a car - regardless of how much use - have your chimney swept annually to ensure safe and efficient use!

Regular chimney sweeping reduces the risk of chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning as well as helping to preserve your flue liner and appliance. It is very important to get your chimney checked and swept by an expert.

Slumbering your stove is when your appliance is set at minimal output, usually overnight, so that burning can be resumed without needing to relight a fire.

It can lead to:
🔴 Sooty and/or dry deposits on the flue lining
🔴 Increased levels of carbon monoxide and particulates
🔴 Increased likelihood of condensation within the chimney

These problems will contribute to a risk of corrosion, ultimately reducing the lifespan of your liner. Find further guidance on our Advice Hub or contact your local HETAS registrant. 👇🔗
