I am currently working on several exciting new projects. Here are a couple of images of a proposal for a modern 1st floor extension to an existing 1970’s bungalow situated on the North Coast in St Agnes and has fantastic sea views.

The proposals take the original bungalow building form and features on a progressive journey whilst continuing to sympathise within its setting.

The site is within a Unesco World Heritage Site and these images are really helpful in the development of the design and planning process.

The newly extended and refurbished Cafe Q located in St Agnes UNESCO World Heritage Site has celebrated its first summer.

The project involved transforming the old Cafe Q by providing two light and airy extensions to enlarge the kitchen and dining areas to deliver a welcoming environment.

There is an internal Cornish stonewall which adds textural interest and features local artwork.

The new roof has been detailed to feature a curve similar to a boats hull.

The newly glazed areas have opened up views across the Cove and to Wheal Friendly Engine House.

As part of the design a disabled WC has been provided with level access.

It has been a joy to be part of the team and I hope people like it.

First photo to share of a recent residential 1st floor extension and remodelling to a bungalow in St Agnes, Cornwall. Swipe to see the original bungalow taken from google street view.

The bungalow is located within the World Heritage Site on the rugged Cornish North Coast originally with potential coastline views.

The design has doubled the floor area whilst improving the visual aesthetics by using traditional materials in a modern way and now has gained the coastline and Atlantic Sea views as far North as Trevose Lighthouse.

The construction materials and methods specified allow the building to be highly energy efficient with low running costs.

I have been involved starting from the initial idea, sketch concepts, planning advice, planning application, building regulations, detailed construction information, principle designer and to support the client and building team.

More photos will follow.

As we are now beyond the New Year and into 2024 I thought I would be brave and share a recent photograph of me.

If you don’t know me already my name is Barry and this will be my 22nd consecutive year working professionally within the planning and architectural sector. I founded BkT Architecture in my garden shed during 2012 and have steered the ship since its inception. The company has since grown slightly but without losing its core values and aims.

My core values and aims have always been to provide a reliable , honest, and consistent service. I wanted to influence buildings and spaces to provide healthy and happy experiences, and to serve a true purpose. There has been so many special moments notched into my journey and I cherish the trusted partnerships and friendships created along the way.

2023 was certainly an uncertain year with the forever increasing cost of living, Countries defending against aggression, the Bank of England's reckless interest rate rise gamble, and generally the challenging economic backdrop.

I do believe that 2024 will bring some positivity as events stabilise. Hopefully these experiences will shape our internal landscape and empower our thoughts throughout the year.

I would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and given up time to read my posts over the past year and I wish you a healthy 2024.

Thank you.

I am thrilled to announce that Micheal Hormann and myself have been shortlisted in the Best Architect or Designer for an Extension Project category for the Build It Awards 2023 for one of our St Agnes Projects!

I designed the project in collaboration with Micheal Hormann from Hormann Architects

This project involved replacing a disused coach garage/workshop building with a light and modern domestic extension, linked to the adjoining home.

The extensions echoed the building form of the old coach garage and workshop by using low pitched zinc roofs and rectangular wall configurations.

The property now benefits from solar PV panels and battery storage to help reduce the buildings energy needs. It was a great pleasure to work on and not forgetting to mention our lovely clients and the other fantastic consultants and builders.

Thank you Build It magazine .
