Why on earth do people buy those horrible plastic holly balls when it’s so easy to make one from beautiful natural foliage ....?

Please message us if you’d like to visit & we’ll give directions. We’re only a small nursery and open if we know someone would like to come and see the holly.

It’s been a constant battle with the birds the last few weeks and our bumper berry crop has really dwindled ....but at least the birds are fed! Luckily most of the standards still have berries and should look lovely for Christmas ......(& at this time of the year we also include a good bundle of foliage)

Here's another seasonal newsflash!

As you probably know, holly is evergreen and has leaves throughout the year. However, as it grows, older leaves are shed to make way for new foliage. The main month for leaf fall is May and you may notice a scattering of yellow, poorly looking leaves on your holly - in addition to new growth. If you shake the plant gently, you might see the leaves falling. This is a natural process and nothing to worry about.

The photo is of a native holly in the hedge by the nursery - you can clearly see the yellow leaves but the plant remains healthy, with lots of new growth and plenty of flowers.

A seasonal newsflash! We often get asked how to tell the difference between a male and female holly so I've just taken some photos:
Picture 1 is of female flowers on Golden King (a female holly inspite of the name!). See the little green ball in the centre of the flower - the beginning of the berry Pic 2 - male flowers on a native holly. Note the mass of stamens. Male holly doesn't have berries. Pic 3 - flowers on Argentea Marginata, another female. Also the new pink foliage which really makes this variety stand out at this time of the year (& late summer when there's another fluch of new growth) Pic 4 - flowers on Alaska, another popular female, similar to native holly but with smaller leaves..

It's worth looking at hollies in your own garden to see if you've got male hollies to pollinate the females

It seems to be an incredible year for holly - most of our plants are laden with flowers so fingers crossed, it should be a bumper berry season later on if they all get pollinated.

To you all!

To you all!

It seems to have been raining for days and days - but one morning of frost last week made the holly look very seasonal.
