'Lets talk about Mackerel'

Over recent years we have noticed a steady decline in Mackerel landings across the South West, and as we head into its season (June/July) we just wanted to make sure everyone is aware of some things.

Now this decline could be for a number of reasons including factory ships in the English Channel hoovering up tons at a time or the increased number of predatory fish in our waters like Tuna and the welcomed increase in Wild Seabass.

Unfortunately for Mackerel it has taken a massive drop this year and our selves have only seen the odd box since the autumn last year, normally fetching in excess of £12kg!!

Subsequently now rate them as a 5 their most unsuitable rating.

When menu planning for spring and summer moth we would highly recommend staying away from Mackerel and look at using more sustainable options such as the equally as beautiful Newlyn Sardines.

'Cornish Octopus'

More and more of these Octopus are being found in Lobster pots around the Cornish coast. It's really not uncommon for fisherman to find pot after pot of just crustacean shells and Octopus.

The same species as their Spanish counterparts the majority that are caught are shipped straight back to the continent on a lorry.

We can all do our bit in promoting 'Fresh Cornish Octopus'

'St Austell Bay Mussels'

Each rope contains over 100kg of mussels and the farm spreads for miles. Each rope sits roughly 20m below the water amongst its own eco system.

The area around the farm is protected from fisherman so is a perfect environment for many species of sealife to thrive.

'Live Shore Crabs'

These little creatures are a staple in Cornwall, normally found in children's crab nets on a quay, however the estuary around Porthilly Oyster Farm is prime stomping ground.
