This year's pumpkin and squash harvest off to the greenhouse for hardening off. They are greedy plants. I dug a hole and put a good amount of well rotted farmyard manure in the bottom, then a layer of soil and then the plant that I grew from seed in my greenhouse. Important is to water in well and keep watering as they aren't just greedy but thirsty too. Remember to put slug and snail prevention around the newly plants or you will return to nothing overnight.

If you are looking for a lovely indoor plant why not try a Clivia. These beautiful South African native woodland plants like it in a cool place in winter and light (but not direct) in summer and reward you with a lovely spring display. Roots should fill the pot and water sparing especially in winter.

Do you grow dahlias? I do, but mine are in a shelter spot in the beds and I don't lift them in the autumn. They do well here in our mild South West winters but elsewhere would probably not survive the winter in the ground. These beauties are however not from my garden but from the walled garden at Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire.

Found 10 of these beautiful little grass snakes in the compost bin I was clearing and safely moved them to the next bin....

Found 10 of these beautiful little grass snakes in the compost bin I was clearing and safely moved them to the next bin. It's not just good to make compost for your garden plants but it's also a habitat for a lot of wildlife.
