While architects have been using models for many years, traditional model-making is a labour-intensive and slow process. However, 3D printed models offer a superior, tangible and tactile option compared to Computer Generated Images (CGI) which are still flat and two dimensional.

At GW Architects whilst appreciating the value of a CGI’s we also understand that there really is nothing better than a physical model to bridge any gaps in understanding a design.

A physical model can help explain and give a clearer understanding of a project and we are delighted to be able to offer this service to any of our clients who think this will help them to visualise their scheme better. At the same time we can also offer a simple Virtual Reality walk-through of your project so you can experience the internal spaces and their relationship to each other.

If you have a potential project that you would like to discuss, please give us a call, drop us an email or contact us on Facebook and we'd be happy to have a chat about your ideas.

Fantastic to visit this project recently to see it now nearing completion.

The original barn on this site stood exposed at the top of a sloping field with amazing long distant views across the valley. The owners had always dreamed of creating their forever home here but knew it would need to be able to withstand the elements.

After gaining planning permission to convert the barn we followed up with an ‘upgrade’ to replace this with a new dwelling. Our brief was to retain a barn like appearance, so the new dwelling is very much in keeping with the scale, style and form of the structure it replaces. However, being a new dwelling, it allowed us to create a more robust structure and fabric to withstand the weather and at the same time factor in a highly insulated shell.

Another recent catch up with our clients to see this superb barn conversion.

The original barn on this site was built by our client’s grandfather to farm the surrounding land and now provides a very special, and cherished family home.

The scheme includes an outbuilding to provide parking, storage and a plant room thus reducing the visual impact on the rural setting by screening parked vehicles and removing the need for paraphernalia such as garden sheds. Both the barn and the outbuilding are clad in black vertical timber cladding and the roofs have a dark grey finish to reduce their prominence in both the immediate and wider settings so the buildings blend into the landscape.

Thank you to Steve Brownhill https://brownhillphotography.co.uk for the fantastic images.

Great to see another completed project being enjoyed by our clients.
This stunning new build property sits within what was the garden of the clients old end of terrace home. It gives them a detached modern and energy efficient home whilst not having to move out of the area they enjoy living in.

It is always exciting when we get to visit our completed projects and see what started as a concept doodle now built and being enjoyed by our clients.

This stunning project has turned a coastal bungalow that despite its great location lost out on getting a sea view, into a breathtaking home that can now take full advantage of the setting.

Construction drawings on the buried water tank conversion in the mountains in Wales are now taking shape.

Before we could start the package, contractors needed to form a new entrance and track for access to the tank. The earth was then stripped back so we could check the condition of the concrete and to make sure what we all thought was buried was actually what was there!

VIA5D continue to support the project with their amazing visuals.

A planning story with a happy ending.

After starting a successful business in their home village these enterprising brothers wanted to be able to have their own homes but as is often the dilemma they were priced out of the market for a local property meaning they couldn’t continue to live where they grew up and established their business.

This is where we entered the story and having spotted they had an old, abandoned workshop next to their business premisses we gained approval to convert this into two small dwellings. But the story doesn’t end there... we have now achieved an approval to replace the workshop with two detached dwellings so not only can they stay in the village they are also close to their business. We are very excited to see the works commence this summer, and the dream become a reality.

If you have a potential project that you would like to discuss, please give us a call on 01409 281362, drop us an email or contact us on Facebook and we’d be happy to have a chat about your ideas.

Nestled in the hills of Powys is this buried concrete reservoir built in the 1960’s. Our clients have acquired the structure together with a surrounding 4 acres of land. Their intention is to convert and extend the shell in a sympathetic manner to create a unique retirement home that retains the reservoirs character. The brief includes a desire to reduce future energy bills as they look to retire and control their expenditure.

The design concept which was discussed and welcomed by the Local Authority was to expose the south and west sides of the tank to maximise the long distant views of the Black Mountains some 40 miles away and harness the free solar gains from these aspects. The two remaining sides and roof will remain buried utilising the free heat gained from the earth. The cantilevered canopy that wraps around the panoramic south and west windows provides solar shading during the summer months to ensure internal temperatures remain comfortable. Any additional heating will be supplied by a ground source heat pump buried in the 4 acres again utilising the free heat from the earth.

The concrete shell is up to 600mm thick in some locations, and this will act as a thermal mass absorbing heat during the day which it will then return to the internal spaces during the night as temperatures drop. The house will be completely off-grid with an array of photovoltaic panels on the garage roof that face directly south which will be connected to battery storage to cover back up on dull days and ensure none of this energy is wasted. The upper floor of the original tank will be an open plan living space within the original concrete walls fully exposed to retain the character and pay homage to the heritage of the structure. Although most of the lower floor remains buried the scheme cleverly uses secret sunken gardens as light wells to flood the internal spaces with daylight.

The property will be a unique retirement home for our clients that will retain the character of the old, buried water tank and radically reduce their servicing costs. Ironically the only utility bill they will have will be the water supply.
A big thanks to VIA5D for the fantastic visuals!
