New to pool or hot tub ownership?

Maybe you’ve just moved into a house with a pool or hot tub, or you’re opening everything back up after winter and not quite sure where to start with the water chemistry.

If you need a bit of guidance, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to offer free advice and point people in the right direction — even if it’s just helping you understand test results or what chemicals you actually need.

Unfortunately there’s a lot of conflicting information online and in Facebook groups, and not all advice is good advice when it comes to keeping your water safe, balanced, and your equipment protected.

A few simple adjustments done properly can save a lot of frustration (and money) later in the season.

Now that swimming pools are starting to go into hibernation for the colder months 🥶, it’s a good time to think about any little repairs or maintenance jobs that need doing before next season.

If you’ve noticed a few leaks, loose fittings, or anything that needs a bit of TLC in your pool or hot tub, now’s the perfect time to get it sorted before next season.

Pool Care Tip: Cyanuric Acid (Stabiliser) Levels

Cyanuric acid (often added through multifunction tablets or stabilised chlorine granules) is an important part of pool care. It acts like sunscreen for your chlorine, protecting it from being destroyed by sunlight.

👉 But here’s the catch:
If stabiliser levels get too high, the chlorine in your water becomes far less effective at keeping the pool clean and safe. This is often called “chlorine lock”.

For example, this pool had a stabiliser level of 64ppm. While that isn’t high enough to cause full chlorine lock, it has already made a lot of the free chlorine ineffective.

✅ A little stabiliser is good.
⚠️ Too much can only be fixed by draining and refilling with fresh water.

🔍 Moral of the story: Always keep an eye on your stabiliser levels—it’s just as important as checking chlorine and pH!

Here’s a fresh test result from a pool. Take a good look at that colour on the left – where do you think it sits on the scale? 🤔

Comparators like this are a great quick check, but here’s the catch: colour perception can be surprisingly subjective! One person might see 7.2, another might swear it’s closer to 7.6

💧 Pool Chemistry in Action 💧

Out today testing a pool — pH reading came in at 7.0. While that’s close, the ideal range is 7.2–7.6 for the perfect balance between swimmer comfort and equipment protection.

💡 Interesting fact:
Chlorine actually works better at a lower pH and becomes less effective as pH rises — but go too low, and you risk corrosion and eye irritation. It’s all about finding that sweet spot
