BUFFALOES TAP INTO CRAIG’S BULLDOG SPIRIT

Former Batley Bulldogs and Sheffield Eagles star Craig Lingard has taken over the reigns as Head Coach at Bramley Buffaloes following the departure of club veteran Chris Gardner.

Lingard spent ten years at Mount Pleasant before turning his hand to coaching in 2008 with a spell on the staff at the Bulldogs before assisting Bradford Bulls but he’s excited by the challenge that lies ahead as the Buffaloes prepare for the 2012 National Conference 3 season.

“The restructuring of the Rugby League pyramid and the arrival of the winter teams within the summer competition has meant we’ve dropped down in the pecking order but the club is as ambitious as ever and we still have long term plans to get back into the professional game.

“I hope I can play a small part in pushing the team in the right direction. Bramley is a famous and proud Rugby League name that, thanks to the monumental efforts of the supporters and local community over the past 12 years, has re-established itself within the game.

“We have a long way to go to get to where the club wants to be but we are all hopeful that the 2012 season will be one step in the right direction,” added Craig who follows in the footsteps of former Buffaloes coaches Mark Butterill and Paul Cook who have both assumed roles within the professional game with Featherstone Rovers and Huddersfield Giants respectively.

“Of course I’d like a long and successful career in coaching,” explained Craig who works as a Prison Officer “but first things first and that is getting Bramley ready for the new season after what have been a testing couple of years for the club.

“We are on the look out for new players and will be holding an evening for anyone interested in pulling on the famous black and amber jersey on March 20th at Stanningley’s Arthur Miller Stadium, 7:30 pm. We hope players keen to make a name for themselves from across the area will turn up and find out more about what we have planned.

“There are many Bramley players who have made the step up to the professional game in recent years and we hope we can unearth a few more gems in the coming months!” added Craig.

Chris Gardner left the club recently to focus on his business after 8 years of sterling service to the club including a role last year as Head Coach and Bramley chair Martyn Cheney was keen to thank him for his efforts.

“We are sorry that Chris came to this decision but the committee would love him to be involved with the club in the future.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris for his efforts since 2004, both on and off the field, supporting the club in all its endeavours.

“Without Chris we wouldn't have got a team on the pitch in 2011 and he played a big part in keeping this club alive.

“Craig takes over the role for the new season and we are all delighted to have got such a well known Rugby League name on board,” added Martyn.

The club kicks off their 2012 season on Friday 20th April with a match against Warrington Wizards at 8pm. Season-tickets are now on sale from the website. For more details visit www.bramleybuffs.com or the club’s page.

‘Birdcage’ Roof Catches the Eye!

A new build commercial and residential development taking shape in the centre of Hipperholme, near Halifax, is really catching the eye of passers by with its distinctive lightweight steel roofing system.

Their attention is due to the complex, gleaming, birdcage style structure that sits on top of the three tier development that will encompass ten residential flats on two levels with additional retail units at road level with main contractor KLH Projects working on behalf of developer Stercap.

Designed and manufactured by U-Roof, a specialist company based in nearby Elland that is finding a ready market amongst selfbuilders and property developers. The structure comprises of u-shaped cold rolled steel beams that fit together ‘like meccano’.

Jeremy Horton of KLH explained: “The complicated nature of the roof meant that conventional timber trusses and beams would have been uneconomical and taken much longer to construct and adjust on site.

“The U-Roof system is fully bespoke for each project and it arrives flat packed and ready to install. It makes perfect sense for developments like this that require a designed to fit solution.

“In addition the galvanised steel beams are impervious to water and allows us to build over the winter months on a site that is straddled by two main roads and a public car park. The ability to co-ordinate planned and phased deliveries to such a tightly enclosed site was another factor in choosing U-Roof,” added Jeremy.

The lightweight steel superstructure sits on top of preformed concrete floors and is supplied complete with structural walls, roof structures and timber floor decks. Apertures were built into the design to accommodate for a number of large specialist dormers as well as window and door openings.

U-Roof inventor and founder, engineer David Thurston, explained: “The complex shape of the development required careful setting out, precise manufacture and equally accurate assembly drawings to ensure strict adherence with the client’s brief and site plans.

“We have worked closely with architect David Horton and structural engineers Mason Clarke Associates to evolve a practical, structurally sound and cost effective solution.

“As far as U-Roof are concerned this is a substantial project. Being installed in phases, it requires a greater degree of planning and co ordination with the main contractor than a single house project.

“In terms of design, the site being angled at 115 degrees posed some tricky challenges as did the number of dormers within the raised eaves roof areas. Because the roof is of a relatively shallow pitch the structural analysis models identified a requirement for eaves bracing at an early stage.

“Precise 3D modelling for each phase of build gives all involved parties confidence in the proposed accuracy and enables early identification of any potential issues before they become a problem,” added David.

Architect David Horton added: “It was very important to utilise as much of the roof space as possible to achieve the design layout required.

“The U-Roof raised eave details gave the desired feeling of space without compromising on the structural integrity of the building. The specialist dormers with barrel roofs were another requirement that the U-Roof system was able to cater for.”

Aside of cost and time benefits, U-Roof’s system offers a host of other advantages with health and safety implications due to its lightweight design and it ticks all of the boxes when it comes to the ever growing need for environmentally friendly construction.

MILL FEED TAKEOVER INCREASES COVERAGE

Peter Rhodes Feed Services (PRFS) Limited, based at Storwood near York, has significantly increased its geographical coverage following the acquisition of Mill Feed (North East) Limited.

Founded in 1974, PRFS provides specialist mobile feed services for livestock farmers across the north Midlands, Yorkshire and parts of the North East whilst Mill Feed (North East) covers Durham, Northumberland and the Scottish Borders

Michael Rhodes of PRFS commented: “Late last year we met up with Bill Doolan, who launched Mill Feed (North East) in 1980, and it was clear that there were a lot of ways in which our businesses complemented each other. The initial introduction came about when David Monkhouse, formerly a PRFS customer from York moved up to Durham and began using Bill’s services. He suggested Bill’s business would benefit from a modern machine as operated by PRFS.

“We took over ownership of the business in December and have since supplied Bill and his team with a Buschoff mobile milling vehicle which has dramatically improved the efficiency of the services he provides to farmers across his region.

“The link with Mill Feed allows us to make better use of our resources for customers ranging from Lincolnshire up to the Borders,” added Michael who has over 250 customers on his books.

Bill Doolan, well known and highly respected amongst farmers in the region, supplies feed services to almost 100 customers, explained: “It made a lot of sense to become part of PRFS and we can now offer a faster, more effective service for our customer base.

“The new Buschoff machine has made a dramatic difference to our operations and will help us to establish PRFS as one of the biggest regional players in the provision of mobile milled feed,” added Bill.

With the latest technology in mobile milling, PRFS is already making its mark in the Durham area, receiving excellent reviews on its on farm service from Bill’s existing customers, including Durham-based farmer George Herdman who owns 220 cows, over 600 beef cattle and 800 ewes.

George exclaimed: “The new milling machine is an impressive piece of kit and makes the whole process of providing feed much faster and more streamlined.”

PRFS Ltd provides a full range of ‘on site’ vitamins, supplements, food blocks and high quality diets for pig, poultry, sheep and cattle farmers. The enlarged business now employs eight full-time staff.

Pakistan RL Moves Step Closer

The establishment of Rugby League in Pakistan and South Asia has moved a step closer thanks to the efforts of former England RL international and British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) founder Ikram Butt together with officials from the British Asian Trust, diplomats and MP Greg Mulholland, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group.

The latest round of talks took place in January at the Pakistan High Commission in London with the major focus being on how to show continuing support for the Prince of Wales’ Pakistan Recovery Fund aimed at assisting with rebuilding the large parts of the country devastated by the 2010 flooding as well as launching the new Pakistan playing jersey.

Ikram explained: “We met at the Pakistan High Commission in London and talked about our support of the charity and the development of Pakistan Rugby League. We also discussed other objectives such as bridging the gap between British Pakistanis and Pakistanis living abroad.

“We view the development of Pakistan Rugby League as a catalyst to further develop the sport in India and across the whole of South Asia. There’s clearly an appetite for it and we need to ensure that the right initiatives and planning are put in place.

“We have a number of objectives with a second official Pakistan RL international planned for Dubai in the near future. Watch this space!” said Ikram, recently awarded a Doctorate in Sport Science by Leeds Metropolitan University for his pioneering sport development initiatives within the UK and abroad.

Greg Mulholland added “By focusing on sport, physical activity, education and cultural exchanges we can, together, create a more harmonious society and go some way to combating the dual threats of Islamophobia and fundamentalism.”

The High Commissioner of Pakistan to the UK, Wajid Shamsul Hasan lauded the efforts of Ikram and added “We are proud of the efforts of Ikram and will continue to support him in his endeavours of the developemnt of rugby league in Pakistan.”

The new official Pakistan RL playing shirt features the Pakistan Recovery Fund on the chest with the Leeds Rugby Foundation’s logo also included on the sleeve.

The Pakistan Recovery Fund, whose patron is HRH Prince of Wales, was set up in response to the ongoing humanitarian effort still required in Pakistan in wake of the 2010 floods and is convened by the British Asian Trust and managed on behalf of the Prince of Wales by Knighton White who campaign for philanthropic causes around the globe.

Mirfield Church and College Resurrected by Anelay

An Anglican monastic community based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, has a new look home following the recent completion of a £2million restoration project at the Church of the Community of the Resurrection.

The 39 week long refurbishment, which focused predominantly on the removal and levelling of stone flooring, has been carried out by York and Manchester based William Anelay, a 264-year-old building restoration and conservation business operating under the auspices of Architects Harris McMillan and Quantity Surveyors Randall Simmonds LLP on behalf of clients the Community of the Resurrection.

Inspired by the rule of St Benedict, the Community is part of the Anglican Church of England and its brethren work closely with a wide variety of people around the world. Founded in 1892 by the Reverend Charles Gore, the Community moved to Mirfield in 1898, then one of Britain’s most thriving industrial centres.

The Grade II Listed church, which acts as the principal place of worship for the community, was built in 1912 from local quarried stone and is topped off with distinctive copper roofs in the Byzantine style. Patrons of the rebuilding appeal include Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Dr Rowan Williams, the current Archbishop of Canterbury who lectured at the venue in the 1970s.

Anelay Site Manager Andy Gabel took up the story: “The principle objective when we arrived on site in April 2011 was to remove the 1000m² of existing stone flooring and then level it out within the main area of the church. The same process was carried out on the 400m² ground floor with ceramic tiles providing the new surface.

“We have also introduced a lift shaft at ground floor level that will provide ‘access for all’ conforming to the latest DDA stipulations as well as installing underfloor heating covered over by ceramic tiles.

“The Church also required extensive refurbishment of its heating, lighting and plumbing systems and the incorporation of a modern acoustic system.

“Externally defective roof tiles were repaired and damaged rainwater goods have been replaced. A number of the Church’s windows also required attention and we have carried out repairs to the stained glass and stone mullions.

“This has been a major challenge especially given the access issues and we’ve had to be creative in our choice of plant machinery! We’ve used the smallest and most powerful diggers available for the floor removal and have utilised a stone crushing machine within the Church which has allowed us to recycle the stone.

“When we arrived on site everything had been taken out of the Church apart from two tombs which were protected before works commenced. All of the plaques within the interior of the Church were also covered.

“A new font, crafted in Italy from solid marble, has been installed together with attractive mahogany and beech benches built at a local prison!

“Father George, operating on behalf of the client, has adopted a real hands on approach to the ongoing work and he’s been involved constructively and decisively within every phase of work carried out,” added Andy.

Father George commented: “We are absolutely delighted with the quality of the work carried out on the Church. In the Centenary year of the Church’s construction it has given us a wonderful environment for prayer and worship, for the activities of the educational institutions on the site, and for our work with the thousands of people who come here. "

"Barry Ennis of Harris McMillan Architects said: “The passion across the teams involved has enabled solutions to complex challenges. There is now a fresh ambience which compliments the rich heritage of the Church. We are delighted that the vision for transformed and revitalised spaces has been so well executed."

William Anelay MD Vernon Carter said: “William Anelay has helped to refurbish hundreds of churches and places of worship and we take a great pride in the expertise and skills that we can bring to such projects.

“The Church of the Resurrection has been a major development and I’m delighted that the work is now complete and the venue can resume providing religious education to members of the Community here,” he added.

The Community at the Church of the Resurrection can now face their Centenary with a renewed confidence and vigour within a building that is fit for purpose in every way.

A CLEAR NO BRAINER FOR UK HOUSEHOLDS!
See through the energy hikes with secondary glazing!

As British households recover from the first frosty shivers of 2012 a growing number are discovering that keeping their homes warm is a no pane no gain no brainer!

Eco-ease secondary glazing, the UK’s only supplier of PET (polyester) panels for secondary or third glazing, comes in at around 10 to 15% of the cost of traditional double glazing, virtually eliminates wearisome condensation and delivers significant savings on energy bills at a time when gas and electricity prices continue to bite.

There are a host of other benefits as one recent customer, Janet Murphy from the West Midlands, discovered to her surprise: “It was so easy to install. I purchased Eco-ease’s Measure 2 Fit (M2F) system and it was just a case of running the magnetic strips around the window frame and attaching the glazing.

“Despite what I thought beforehand it doesn’t affect the aesthetic appeal of your window in any way.

“It really came into its own during the recent frosts in December and January and, when I’d normally be mopping up condensation, I was instead enjoying a warmer, cosier house. I’ve already told all my friends about it!”

Another satisfied customer, Richard Cook from Kent, exclaimed: “At a time when money is tight and we are all trying to save on our bills this really is a no brainer!”

Founded in 2010, Eco-ease has already been profiled extensively within the national media and on BBC Radio 2 and retails its M2F system through its own site and through established and well trusted web commerce sites such as www.nigelsecostore.co.uk and www.uswitch.com.

In addition a cheaper DIY version is available through www.ecoease.co.uk and instructional videos are available to watch on Youtube.

Eco-ease Director John Feely commented: “Secondary glazing is quite simply one of the cheapiest and easiest ways of making your home more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. We lose anywhere between 15 and 30% of energy through glazing.

“The recent frost was a wake up call for many. Despite recent gas and electricity price reductions there’s no doubt that there will be more shivers to come this winter for hard pressed Brits who are watching their pennies!” added John.

UK HOUSEHOLDS CAN DO MORE TO CUT ENERGY BILLS

Today’s announcement by major energy supplier EDF that gas bills will be reduced by 5% from February 7th will be welcome news for hard pressed UK households however homeowners and landlords can save far more by installing Eco-ease secondary glazing recently featured on BBC Radio 2 and in national newspapers!

EDF is the first of the major energy suppliers to bring down the price of gas with other suppliers expected to follow suit but there are many measures that households can take to reduce their energy bills with secondary or third glazing offering potential savings of upto 20% given the amount of energy lost through windows in the typical UK home.

Despite the mild winter weather hundreds of Eco-ease customers have discovered the benefits of the easily installed Eco-ease Measure 2 Fit glazing panels which cost around 10% of double glazing and are available from a variety of websites including www.uswitch.com and www.nigelsecostore.co.uk as well as www.ecoease.co.uk which also supplies a cheaper DIY option.

A new video has recently been uploaded that reveals the sheer simplicity of Eco-ease secondary glazing and this can be viewed on the Eco-ease website or by visiting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99mE8a9EocM&feature=youtu.be

Sylvia McCracken who owns a seafront property in Ayrshire has become a recent convert and she saw her Eco-ease secondary glazing come to the fore during the gales that hit the UK in December and January: “I’ve installed Eco-ease on my sea facing windows at a fraction of the cost of double glazing and they’ve eliminated drafts and condensation.

“It was so easy to install. I just had to fix a magnetic strip around the inside of my window frame and then attach each glazing panel. It went up and comes down in seconds!

“During the gales they played a big part in keeping my house warm. Without them the drafts would have been unbearable and I’m spreading the word about their merits to my friends and family!” added Sylvia.

Eco-ease Director John Feely commented: “Sylvia is one of many to find out that installing secondary glazing is quite simply one of the most cost effective and easy changes to make to your home to make it more energy efficient.

“The announcement by EDF is good news but energy prices drops are short lived and it’s more likely than not that the price of oil and gas will be increasing later this year.”
