Busy week out on the road with site inspections. This time in Essex where the project is progressing well, with the top floors 95% finished internally and other floors not far behind. Externally now that the scaffold is being struck, the hard landscaping can get moving. Completion by the end of year is on track. Excellent teamwork!

Another site inspection in sunny Kent at a different location. The build is progressing well with the work progressing on the first floor. The hard hats gave some much needed shading (think there may have been an ice cream consumed after too).

The team spent a glorious day onsite in Hampshire at a site progress meeting with a scheme that very close to practical completion. Following the meeting the walk through of the site and building gave a complete overview of how the work is progressing and enabled us to envisage residents moving in. Exciting times!

As Architects we often hold public consultations which enables us to gather thoughts and insights from the local community, identify and address any design concerns and ensure we can help meet local needs. Being open with the local community with plans helps to build a trust relationship and at times can streamline the planning approval process. We’ve held quite a few of these recently and it’s a valuable and rewarding part of our jobs speaking with the local community whom developments may affect. Plus we often meet some great characters with some hilarious stories! Heartwarming.

Phew its a scorcher in Kent (note the photo - iPhone overheating - left in for effect!).

Rukhsar Zahid braved the extremes for a site inspection today to see the roof works continuing to move forward. The timber roof structure has now beenn fully installed with half of the care home roof already fitted, with battens ready to be finished with tiles.

Melissa Magee is at Caring Times Owners Club today in sunny Chester, presenting with Jenny Buterchi from PRP on "Care Homes in 2030: What your home needs to look like to still be relevant". Some great audience interaction and thought provoking themes are being addressed.

Our very own Melissa Magee is a finalist in the Inspiring Women in Property Awards 2026 in the category Woman of the Year - Professional Services. The team here don’t need an award to know how inspiring she is so are thrilled of this external recognition for her.

Go Mel! 👏

A valuable trip to Guildford to tour The Almshouse Association at Abbots Hospital. We were able to view the property and special trinkets of history that the Almshouse hold, such as George Abbots Third edition of A Brief Description of the Whole World from the 17th Century. We sit on the panel of consultants, which enables any member of the charity to contact us for architectural guidance, and such visits give us the opportunity to meet those operating around the country. Great stuff being done by great people!

We’re British so of course we’re going to talk about the weather.

Solar gain is a fundamental of architectural design. Using “free heat” to assist in warming a care home or IRC and reducing reliance on energy is the ideal, but how do we adjust this when the sun puts its hat on and comes out to play? ☀️

Adapting to overheating is not about a single solution, but a combination of design techniques. From high-performance glazing, solar control films, and external shading to natural ventilation, thermal mass, and green infrastructure, these elements work together to maintain comfort while minimising energy use.
