Mail Order Trees

Mail Order Trees Welcome to our page! Here at Mail Order Trees we pride ourselves in producing and delivering quality British grown trees to the best possible standard.

Mail Order Trees is the online side of our nursery, Simpson’s nurseries. We are situated in Fordham, which is a little village in between Ely and Newmarket in Cambridgeshire. We launched the online side of the business in 2008 but we have been growing and selling trees for over 30 years. If you take a look at our website, you will soon discover that we actually sell a lot more than just trees; we

also offer a wide range of shrubs, conifers, climbers, grasses and ferns. We grow 90% of the stock we send out so we know that your goods have been well looked after at every stage. We put a lot of time and effort into ensuring that our plants and trees are strong and healthy specimens that will thrive in your garden. We understand that for a lot of people the concept of ordering trees online is an unusual idea, but it actually saves you the hassle of trying to get your trees home without damaging them. We have created a process that allows our trees to get to you in a fast, safe and efficient manner. Our specially designed boxes ensure our trees do not get damaged in transit, we also send our trees on an overnight service so they get to you the day after they have been dispatched. You can find more information about us, and about all our products, at www.mailordertrees.co.uk

In winter, we all know that trees need mulch. But it also comes in handy during summer too.

During warmer weather, it helps soil retain moisture, reduces w**d growth and keeps root temperatures more stable.

Apply mulch around the base of young trees, leaving a small gap around the trunk to allow airflow and prevent excess moisture against the bark.

One of the most common problems for newly planted trees that we see is inconsistent watering.

Frequent light watering only wets the surface and encourages shallow roots.

Instead, give the soil a deep soak so moisture reaches the full root zone.

This helps roots grow deeper and improves drought tolerance as temperatures rise.

Liquidambar: A Tree for Spectacular Autumn Colour.

Liquidambar, often known as the sweet gum tree, is one of the finest choices for those who love a stunning autumn display.

With its deeply lobed, maple-like leaves, Liquidambar transforms in autumn, turning shades of fiery red, orange, and purple.

The vibrant colours bring warmth and drama to the garden just as many other plants are beginning to fade, making Liquidambar a real showstopper in the autumn landscape.

This tree’s foliage is captivating not only for its colour but also for its glossy, leathery texture, which catches the light beautifully throughout the seasons.

Fresh spring growth often appears lighter in colour than older leaves.

New leaves are softer and contain less chlorophyll while they develop.

Over the next few weeks, they gradually darken and toughen up as they mature.

This is a completely normal part of seasonal growth and one of the clearest signs that your tree is actively growing.

How far apart should you plant trees?

It’s one of the most common questions gardeners ask.

Plant trees too close together and they compete for light, water and nutrients.

Over time this can lead to overcrowding and poorly shaped trees.

As a simple guide for UK gardens:

Small ornamental trees: 3-4 metres apart
Medium garden trees: 4–6 metres apart
Large shade trees: 8–12 metres apart

Planting a hedge or wildlife area? Spacing will be much closer depending on the species.

Getting spacing right from the start helps trees grow stronger and look better as they mature.

We’ve put together a full guide to help you plan your planting properly.

Salix, or Willows, are versatile trees and shrubs with delicate catkins in spring. Perfect for water features, they bring movement and a naturalistic feel to the landscape.

Salix, or Willow, is a tree that brings a natural elegance to the garden with its soft, flowing branches and delicate foliage. Whether it’s the majestic weeping willow draped over a pond or a compact variety for a smaller space, Salix offers something for every gardener.

In spring, many varieties display striking catkins, often referred to as "p***y willows," which add seasonal charm and attract pollinators. Its timeless beauty and adaptability make it a favourite for creating a serene, naturalistic setting.
