Want to encourage more birds into your garden?

Birds don’t just add life and song, they also help control pests, support pollination and spread seeds, making them essential for a healthy garden ecosystem.

You don't need loads of space to make a bird-friendly spot – here are five plants to try.

🐦 Guelder rose (Viburnum opulus) – spring flowers and bright red berries that birds love in autumn
🐦 Ivy (Hedera helix) – nectar attracts insects for birds to feed on in autumn, followed by winter berries
🐦 Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) – dense growth for nesting plus red berries through late summer and autumn
🐦 Roses (Rosa moyesii) – single pink flowers are followed by tomato-sized hips that provide winter fare for birds. Insect-eating birds also help control aphids.
🐦 Crab apples (Malus sylvestris) – blossom, fruit and insects all in one, offering food and shelter throughout the year

Our Make A Metre Matter campaign is supported by the green mobile network, Ecotalk, and partnering with 30x30 UK, the national campaign helping to secure 30 per cent of the UK’s land and sea for nature by 2030.

Join us in playing our wellness bingo – pick something from the picture to do today and let us know how you get on, try a different one each day for the next few weeks or make your own list of things you'd like to do.

Top tips to stay well from the NHS:

• Get your vaccines and boosters. Protect yourself and others by getting your flu vaccination, and if you are an at-risk group your COVID-19 booster
• Keep warm during the day. Wrap up in lots of layers of thin clothes, even when you go to bed. Keep doors closed to block draughts. Try to heat rooms you regularly use to at least 18°C.
• Keep moving. Move around indoors and try to get outside for a walk. Avoid sitting for more than one hour.
• Wrap up at night. Wear layers to bed, including socks. Use a hot water bottle or an electric blanket. (Don't use a hot water bottle and electric blanket together.) Keep your windows closed at night.
• Eat well. Make sure you eat a balanced diet with lots of seasonal fruit and vegetables. And try to eat at least one hot meal a day.
• Stay hydrated. Regular meals and hot drinks can help you keep warm.
• Have your medication on hand. Make sure you have the right medicines at home in case you get poorly. Ask your pharmacist if you're not sure what medications you should have.
• Stop the spread of germs. Protect yourself and others by washing your hands with warm, soapy water, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and wearing a mask in public spaces.
• Look after your mental health. The winter months can take a toll on our mental wellbeing, so make sure you're looking after your mental health, just as you do your physical health. If you are feeling down, speak to someone – a friend, family member, or a healthcare professional like your doctor.

I read that 88 percent of people who set New Year resolutions fail them, by the second Friday in January, which has fittingly coined the name ‘quitter’s day’
The reality is there are a number of things about the way we make New Year’s resolutions that set us up for failure before we’ve even started.
• We think too big - people often set resolutions that are too big and need smaller, immediate goals to succeed.
• We aren’t asking why - understanding why you want to change is more important than thinking you should change.
Review any resolutions you’ve made and ask yourself . . .

Do I really want to achieve this goal?
Will it make me happy if I accomplish it?
Is the effort to accomplish my goal worth the discomfort I will face?
Would I make this a goal for myself if it was just one random day?

Once you have a goal that you want to do for yourself, break that goal down into smaller chunks so you have steps to work towards your end goal. This way you can feel rewarded for accomplishing many small things instead of tackling one huge task.

Think SMART (see second image)

Having your goals written in this way you will feel more accomplished each week instead of having an ambiguous goal that it’s unclear how you’ll reach.

The reason why quitters day is a known thing is because so many people fail to hold themselves accountable for their goals and ultimately forget or give up after a few weeks. As well as holding yourself accountable, you can use a friend, family member, trainer, counsellor, or anyone else you choose as your accountability partner. When you have an accountability partner it motivates you more because you feel less alone, and you have another person to encourage you to persevere and not give up

Good luck and let me know how you get on!
