Hi guys,
This one is a rather sad subject, it's about how the whole of UK but especially Devon and Cornwall have been ravaged by the tree disease that is called Ash Dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus).
Ash Dieback is a fungal infection that is spread by spores released from the fruiting body of the fungus. It gets into the tree's system by entering the soft parts of the tree (the leaves) and works it's way back towards the trunk. That's why the first symptoms you tend to notice is a patchy canopy during spring and summer when the tree is normally at full leaf.
Another sign is a diamond shaped lesion at growth points or where the branch meets the trunk. The first year the tree normally appears healthy and depending on the resistance of the tree it'll soon start to decline. Often other pathogens or fungus can get a chance at this point and increase the rate of decline.
It's important to keep an eye on all trees for safety reasons but even more important for ash trees at the moment as they can go from looking perfectly healthy to dangerous in 6 months or less.
Here at Avon Arb we have alot of experience of dealing with trees with Ash Dieback. We can assess your trees and work out the best course of action. As we're an environmentally minded company we won't recommend radical actions just to line our pockets, but instead work out the best way to retain a tree or create a staged decline plan.
Don't hesitate to get in contact for all or any of your tree or garden care needs.

When the huge glaciers of the last ice age receded, birch trees would have been one of the first to re-colonise the rocky, ice-scoured landscape.
Hence, ecologists refer to birch as a pioneer species. In Celtic mythology, birch is also a tree of beginnings and came to symbolise renewal and purification. Birch or Beithe, is the first tree of the Ogham, the Celtic tree alphabet. It was celebrated during the festival of Samhain (what is now Halloween in Britain). Samhain was the start of the Celtic year, when purification was important and people used bundles of birch twigs to drive out the spirits of the old year. Later this would evolve into the ‘beating the bounds’ ceremonies in local parishes. Gardeners still use the birch besom, or broom, to ‘purify’ their gardens, and besoms were also the archetypal witches’ broomsticks. They used them in their shamanic flights, sometimes after the use of extracts of the fly agaric mushrooms found in birchwoods.

Happy Halloween guys 🍄🌳🍁👻🧟
