LESSON FROM THE RIVER SCANDAL

You have to applaud the efforts of the New Forest Friends of The Earth, who have been ( voluntarily) taking the trouble to test water quality in local rivers.

As a result of their efforts, they discovered the presence of raw sewage in Lymington River. They alerted the authorities to this whereupon it was discovered that a number of houses had been illegally plumbed into drains that ran directly into the river, decades ago.

Such scandals should serve as a wake up call that the proper authorities haven't been doing their job properly. It surely shouldn't rely on caring volunteers to uncover these things !

Sadly, the previous government allowed a situation in which an under resourced Environment Agency had to rely on testing and reporting by..... the water companies!

The question is when will we ever learn? Some politicians promise to reduce taxes, saving money, to free up businesses, by loosening regulation.... and the consequences are entirely predictable.

The plain fact is that public services cost money. Only snake oil salesman pretend otherwise. Whether it is a proper testing / monitoring programme for rivers, or anything else, you get what you pay for.... otherwise you are are being sold down the river.
