Today is World Environment Day 2026 🌍 ♻️

The planet doesn't argue, nor does it negotiate. It sends signals that change needs to happen, but that often gets clouded by noise and distraction that action doesn't need to happen yet.

This World Environment Day, the focus is on climate change and the urgent signals the Earth is sending us, and the signals we choose to send back. The question is no longer if change comes, but how we guide it and how fast it happens.

We know we still have a long way to go, but at George Barnsdale, we take efforts every day to be environmentally conscious and do what we can to reduce our carbon footprint.

Some of the initiatives we're proud of include:
âś… Since installing our new Weinig CNC profiling centre in 2025, we have seen a decrease in our electricity usage by over 25% to date, compared with our 2025 usage.
âś… April 2026 saw a decrease of 40%, in energy usage compared to April 2025 usage.
âś… The profiling centre is less energy-intensive than the older machines it replaces and can feed unused electricity back into the system.
âś… We have cut our carbon footprint by over 13% since we began benchmarking emissions in 2023.

Why does maintaining the original character of a heritage property matter?

England has some of the oldest housing stock in Europe, and preserving it is essential. Historic England states that the historic character of a place is a “cultural expression” shaped by how people have interacted with a place over time.

A heritage property’s defining qualities lie in its design, materials, proportions, and layout. These elements form the foundation of the building’s identity, one that should be respected as you adapt it for modern living.

Maintaining this original character is important for several reasons:

✅ Authenticity: Period features reflect traditional craftsmanship and tell the story of the home’s past.
✅ Value: Well-preserved historic details often enhance a property’s market appeal and long-term value.
âś… Legal compliance: Altering protected features without permission can result in enforcement action.
âś… Longevity: Traditional materials, when properly maintained, can outperform many modern alternatives.

Ultimately, thoughtful upgrades should enhance a property’s usability without diminishing what makes it special.

Read our blog, 'How to customise your home while retaining its character', for more insights into how to customise without compromise.

A Refined Revival: Restoring Character to a 20th-Century Manor House

This early 1900s Edwardian home was originally a manor house in the village of Oxton, Nottinghamshire. Today, the property has been thoughtfully reimagined as a modern family home for Mr & Mrs Beardsley, inspired by the original character of the property and now infused with neutral, elegant décor.

The couple bought the Manor House in October 2024, after deciding it was time to move back to the UK to be closer to family after 20 years of working and living in Europe (Budapest, Paris, and finally Switzerland). The plan was to undertake a full renovation project, from new internal and external electrics to two new bathrooms, and the replacement of all windows and doors, ready for the couple to move into the home in early 2025.

This restored manor house is set in the quaint village of Oxton, 10 miles northeast of Nottingham city centre. The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside, tucked away off the main road. The Manor House sits opposite one of the village’s most notable landmarks: St. Peter and St. Paul Church, a Grade I listed building dating back to the 12th century.

Unlike the church opposite, the Beardsley home is not a listed building, but the property does sit within the Oxton Conservation Area. Although this meant planning permission was not required, the owners were advised to seek a Lawful Development Certificate from their local council to make significant changes to the windows and doors – and the guidance of an experienced supplier proved essential in navigating that process.

Period homes offer a unique blend of history, craftsmanship, and charm, often appreciating over time.

However, their age and construction methods can mean higher maintenance requirements. Because of their unique history and craftsmanship, there may be restrictions on what changes you can make if your heritage home needs an upgrade.

That said, sympathetic customisation is not only possible, but it can also significantly improve comfort, energy efficiency, and usability without compromising heritage value.

Windows and doors play a vital role in this balance. They contribute heavily to a home’s character while also influencing energy performance, security, and day-to-day comfort. Even where original features remain, their performance is likely to have declined over time. Fortunately, modern timber solutions make it possible to upgrade without losing authenticity.

In our latest blog, we explore how to customise your period home with timber windows and doors while staying true to its unique character, and how working with experienced specialists can make the process much simpler.
