A fireback is a panel typically placed at the rear wall of a fireplace, behind the fire. When made of cement or clay, it serves similar functions as traditional fireback's, which are often cast from metal, but with some variations in material properties.
Functions of a Fireback (Cement or Clay):
1. Heat Protection: A fireback helps protect the back wall of a fireplace from the intense heat generated by the fire. Cement or clay firebacks provide a durable surface that can withstand repeated exposure to heat.
2. Heat Reflection: Firebacks made of cement or clay, while not as efficient as cast iron at heat reflection, still help radiate some heat back into the room. They can improve the efficiency of the fireplace by directing more warmth towards the living space rather than losing it up the chimney.
3. Aesthetic Appeal: Firebacks can also be decorative. This is especially common in Victorian or period-style homes, where detailed firebacks add historical character.
4. Fireplace Longevity: They help extend the life of a fireplace by preventing cracking, deterioration, or damage to the brickwork or stone behind the fire.
They are particularly useful in period homes, as they can be customized to match historical architectural styles. They are also used in modern fireplaces as an alternative to metal firebacks, offering similar functionality with potentially lower cost and greater flexibility in design.
