🏭 A Building with a Story – From Pottery to Fireplaces to Tiles

Some buildings don’t just stand the test of time — they tell the story of it.

Our home on Broom Street in Hanley has seen generations of craftsmanship pass through its doors.

Originally known as Britannic Pottery, the building was part of Stoke-on-Trent’s proud ceramic heritage, producing pottery in the heart of the Potteries during the city’s industrial peak. The original “Britannic Pottery” signage, visible in the image on the façade is a reminder of those early days.

In later years, the site became home to Courtland Fireplaces Ltd, marking a shift from pottery production to fireplace manufacturing. While the products changed, the building remained rooted in skilled, hands-on British manufacturing.

Today, the same brick walls house H&E Smith Ltd — continuing the tradition of ceramic craftsmanship that began here over a century ago. From refractory fireplace tiles in our early years as Smith & Warrilow to Victorian wall tiles, Underground ranges and Eco-Glazed Brick Slips, the craft has evolved — but the commitment to quality has never changed.

This year, we are proudly celebrating 100 years of crafting beautiful tiles in Stoke-On-Trent.

From 1926 to 2026, it’s been a century of heritage, craftsmanship and dedication to quality — and we couldn’t have done it without you and our amazing team. 🧱🤎

We officially turn 100 on 30th July 2026, and we’ll be marking the occasion in a number of special ways throughout the year.

The rich Victorian Green glaze adds depth, character, and a truly striking backdrop to this beautifully crafted exterior mural. 🇺🇸✨

It’s always such a pleasure to receive photos of completed projects 😍

We were absolutely delighted to see these beautiful images following the recent refurbishment of Ox and Finch

For this project, they chose a striking combination of our Eco-Glazed Brick Slips in the shades Jade, Victorian Green, Ochre, and Treacle.

Together, these colours create a bold, characterful, and truly eye-catching restaurant frontage that pays homage to classic Victorian style while feeling fresh and contemporary ✨💚💛🤎

It’s fantastic to see how these handcrafted tiles transform a space — adding warmth, depth, and a distinctive identity to one of Glasgow’s most loved dining spots.

Another beautiful hospitality project featuring our Victorian Brown 9x3 Wall Tile — this time at White Cloth Wine, Leeds.

Designed by interior designers Hunters Daughter, the scheme transforms a listed 17th-century building into a warm and characterful wine bar. The rich brown glaze of our handmade tiles forms a glossy barfront that perfectly complements the exposed brick, timber beams and tanned leather banquettes.

🏛️ The Pembury Tavern, Hackney – Pub Refurbishment

We’re proud to have our Eco-Glazed Brick Slips in Victorian Green featured in the stunning refurbishment of The Pembury Tavern in Hackney, London.

Designed by interior designers Hunters Daughter, this 280 sqm project reimagines a much-loved landmark pub — restoring its warmth and heritage while creating a timeless space that feels both classic and contemporary.

Our handmade Eco-Glazed Brick Slips, produced sustainably in Stoke-on-Trent, form the striking bar front, adding depth, colour, and craftsmanship to this characterful interior.

This beautiful shopfront, featuring our H&E Smith tiles, was part of the Buxton Spring Gardens project and has proudly been awarded a Civic Trust Conservation Award 🏆✨

The tiles showcased are from our Victorian ceramic range in elegant Midnight Blue 💙🧱

✨Proud moment in Westminster! ✨

Our MD, Fred Smith joined The Right Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, for the grand reopening of the newly renovated Parliament Street public convenience.

🎨 Guests enjoyed a tour featuring striking new artwork by James Lambert, with Digital Ceramics producing the overlays and tiles proudly supplied by H&E Smith.

🏛 The event celebrated the collaboration between City of Westminster, FM Conway, Hugh Broughton Architects, and the Contemporary Art Society in restoring this historic space.

A wonderful afternoon of speeches, networking, and celebrating heritage brought back to life in the heart of London. 💙
