I do love a golden hallway

The hallway of this country house project by Tamsyn Mason is painted in ‘Sudbury Yellow’ by Farrow & Ball. “My client was very design literate and knew what she wanted,” Tamsyn explains, pointing to the yellow hallway that the client was determined to have. Tamsyn has an eye for colour – “colour is something I love, from brights to neutrals and the science behind it” – and knew immediately that ‘Sudbury Yellow’ from Farrow & Ball would be the right choice. “The volume of the hallway is lovely but it’s dark. I don’t know if doing such lonely work leads you to find joy and gratitude in the smallest of things, but having a favourite mug in my customers house feels like the biggest flex.

It’s in equal part that I am so welcomed that I feel comfortable enough to feel at home, but in return I treat their homes as if they were my own.

I absolutely love this job, and my work, and although I am careful about who I work for, I am also very grateful that the universe puts so many lovely people in my path.

There’s a few important considerations I take when advising on colours in peoples homes but two in particular stand out above the rest…

I’ve never been one for plucking a trend from instagram and recreating it in anyone’s home.

If a degree in fashion promotion taught me nothing else it’s that anything ‘in’ fashion will undoubtably fall ‘out’ of fashion.

Instead when consulting on colour, I will ask about personal likes and dislikes. Within a few questions I can often narrow the vast array of choice, to a set of colours I think they’ll like, that will work in the space.

But sometimes they are open to interpretation, in which case it’s fun to take inspiration from the Art in their home, or pieces they’ve collected from their own adventures.

They might go on to ask their friend what they think of the colour choice… it’s human nature for people to seek confirmation from those in their inner circle.

But I always think of the quote ‘don’t tell people your plans, show them the results…’

And for me, when I’ve carefully considered their emotional relationship with colour, how colour works with the light in a room, or works with their personal possessions. I’m not at all concerned with their friends perspective. For they will have a whole different taste palette of their own, and they don’t live there.

In essence I avoid following trends and the uneducated opinions of others, and my customers are very happy 💫

I’ve done 4 Bathroom’s already this year.
This was quite a large Bathroom and it took me four days. One of the days was primarily spent sanding and filling the woodwork. A quality finish takes time, But with that comes value, and the feel of the room is remarkably improved.
Despite being painted in an almost Identical colour, I think you can agree that it’s not just a lick of paint that makes the difference here.

Woodwork like this is easier to keep clean. Prolonging the life of your paintwork.

I love results like this.

Just finished adding this gorgeous pop of colour to my clients all white house 🤩

In the morning this looks so green, but in the evening when the sun has set on the other side of the house the evening light presents this as a beautiful blue hue.

The theme of this year has been that I am running on an entirely different calendar to everyone else so why would Christmas be any different?

Just wanted to wish you all a huge Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.
•
I am eternally grateful to those who have patiently waited for my arrival and those who have accommodate me being on my own. It has meant significantly elongated waiting times and job times.
•
But for me, It has notably reduced my stress levels and blood pressure. To be able to regain some of my life for a better purpose, has been very important for me, and the health of Harrie Interiors. I wouldn’t be here without my customers, and I can continue to be here because of my customers. I have not lost sight of that and doing my best work when I finally get to you has never been higher on my agenda. 🫶🏻

Lastly Thank You for the huge support I have received from far away friends and fellow decorators on here. We all work incredibly hard, and face similar challenges. Health being a hot topic the last couple years, we can’t deny as we age the job is seriously taking a toll.
I urge you all to look after your bodies, it’s the best tool we have, it cannot be stolen but if it breaks we can seldom replace it. I was laughed at when I stepped on the scene in my ‘gas mask’ a 9 years ago, and now everyone is wearing them. So I don’t mind being laughed at again, for stretching after work, and prioritising my health. I hope to still be here to see everyone doing the same in the future ♥️🙏🏻✌🏻🕊️☮️🌍🥂

I think the biggest misconception bought to you via before and afters like these is that everything was simply and easily installed.

This could not be further from the truth. All the substrates are sanded vigorously, great big holes have to be taped and filled, sanded, filled, painted, sanded and painted again.

Noisy dust extraction machines suck sawdust through even louder chop saws, cutting the mouldings for the panelling that will soon to be punctured with a chorus of bangs from the nail gun.

Redecorating is a huge, noisy, messy, undertaking. But here on instagram, it is rewarded for all of that, it’s a chance to showcase the beauty of the hard work.

This really is the BEST part of my job.
