We often debate where we can build.
Maybe we should be asking how well we do it.

We were reminded of this project recently, nearly 10 years on. A house that almost didn’t happen.

Not because of its impact, but because a line on a plan, the settlement boundary, said no.

So we rethought it.

Instead of placing a building on the landscape, we let it sit quietly within it. Set into the slope, beneath a meadow roof, preserving every view of the valley beyond.

Same site. Different approach.

Sometimes the right answer isn’t to push harder, but to design more carefully.

So here’s the question:
Are settlement boundaries too limiting, or do they push us towards better architecture?

We’re excited to share this recently completed family home in the Surrey countryside.

Designed to feel rooted in its landscape, not as a backdrop but something to feel a part of everyday life, the house is shaped around long views into neighbouring woodland and a close relationship with the garden beyond. In winter, low sunlight filters deep into the living spaces, warming textured surfaces and drawing the landscape quietly inside.

Organised around family life, relaxed, tactile interiors inspired by South Africa sit alongside covered outdoor areas and generous glazing that allow life to move easily between inside and out throughout the year.

We’re really pleased to see this self-build project achieve planning permission in the Cotswold National Landscape (formally AONB).

The project re-uses all the existing materials from a large defunct stable block, concrete hardstanding used for hard core, blockwork used in retaining walls with the steel frame repurposed. Excavated spoil from the site is re-used in the landscaping, aiming to mitigate the need for any disruptive and carbon intensive truck movements to remove unused material from site.

Built around a super-insulated timber frame and and large integrated PV array, the result will be a low-energy, comfortable and delightful home - carefully embedded in its landscape and designed to make the most of its remarkable views.

There’s a certain calm that settles in places designed for slow living - where the hearth warms the air, the deck invites bare feet, and the landscape feels like a natural extension of home.

Spaces like this remind us that comfort isn’t only found indoors. It lives in the soft morning light, the stillness of the garden, the rhythm of seasons shifting beyond the glass. It lives in the simple act of stepping outside - easily, seamlessly, and at every stage of life.

Thoughtful, accessible thresholds mean that the connection to nature doesn’t fade with time. They keep the outdoors close, offering fresh air, sunlight, and a sense of grounding no matter your age or mobility.

In this home, the hearth becomes a gathering point, the porch a place to linger, and the surrounding landscape a quiet companion. A dwelling that welcomes you into the world beyond its walls – gently and naturally, like a Sanctuary.

We’re excited to be collaborating with to bring this project to life.

Sometimes the simplest spaces are the most delightful to encounter.

Built by hand, this wilderness hut is a quiet return to place and craft - a way of thinking through doing, as Michael Pollan* might say.

Beautifully captured on film, these images reflect both the making and the discovery of the hut, inviting a slower, more grounded connection to the landscape.

An autumn start onsite... There’s something quietly thrilling about seeing an idea begin to take shape.

This garden pavilion, part pergola and part boundary wall, will frame the edge and bring new life to the leisure gardens of a cherished local heritage home. Even at these first steps on site, you can sense the rhythm of the space, the play of light and shadow, and how architecture can sit lightly within its setting.

Breaking ground this week is a milestone after a careful detail design phase with brilliant consultants and contractors. We’re excited to see this project starting to come to life.
