Pollarding 🪵 Pollarding is a technique often suggested for old and veteran trees as a way of upping their chances of survival for the future. Some of our oldest trees are pollards, which stand for many years due to their lower centre of gravity- usually storm damaged, (which always creates better habitat) but in this case GMTC intervention 🌳 The survey suggested either removal or a severe pollard to a height no more than 10m as the tomogram indicated extensive decay but noted how important trees of this age are 🐞
So it looks pretty gnarly but hopefully she stands for a while longer yet! 💪🏻

Conservation deadwooding 🪵 We had the absolute pleasure of working on three oldies last week 🌳 The residents of the road had a tree survey carried out and asked us to come in to complete the recommended works. This included ‘conservation deadwooding’- a spec not often seen but as these trees are so old and their wood so valuable to wildlife, only dead of a certain diameter was removed if it was overhanging the road. Everything else was wobbled, shaken and snapped by hand to mimic high winds and leave as much sturdy deadwood as possible! Everyone’s a winner 🥇 🐛 🐜 🐞

Pinch punch 1st day of the month! That means the countdown for getting any planting done is on ⏰ The end of March roughly will mark the end of the dormant season, so for those looking for bare root trees they will no longer be available from most suppliers. But have no fear, a month is plenty of time and we can liaise with some of the best nursery’s around to ensure too quality trees 🌲
