A little reminder that good garden maintenance isn’t just about appearance – it’s also about protecting wildlife. 🐦
I was recently asked to reduce this mature Laurel hedge by a couple of feet. As always, before carrying out any work, I carried out a thorough inspection and discovered an active bird’s nest hidden deep within the foliage.
Because of this, I politely declined the work and advised the customer that the hedge should be left undisturbed until the young birds have fledged
Bird nesting season generally runs from March to August, although some species can nest earlier or later depending on the weather. Disturbing an active nest is not only harmful to our wildlife, but can also be an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
✅ Regular inspections before hedge work
✅ Responsible and wildlife-friendly practices
✅ Advice that puts nature first
✅ Garden care with respect for the environment
Sometimes the right thing to do is to put the tools down and come back later. A beautiful garden and thriving wildlife can go hand in hand.
If you're planning hedge cutting or tree work during the nesting season, always check carefully first – our feathered friends may already have moved in!
