With drier, warmer conditions becoming the new normal in our gardens, it is time to plan ahead in your borders. The hardy lavender-blue flowers of the Russian sage, Salvia 'Blue Spire' (syn. perovskia), are beginning to open in mid-July and bloom in full Aug/Sep. Each plant reaches 1m across and 1.2m in height creating real impact at this time of year.
This tough, deciduous sub-shrub has an upright habit which is maintained when grown in poor, free-draining soils in full sun.
Russian sage looks great when grown as a stand-alone or when grown alongside other drought-tolerant plants of contrasting shapes, textures and colours, such as Stipa gigantea, Yucca gloriosa and Ballota acetabulosa.
