• Produces unusual edible flowers in late spring, with sweet petals that can be eaten fresh or added to salads.
• Delicious egg-shaped fruit ripens in autumn, with a tropical flavour often compared to pineapple, guava and strawberry.
• Thrives in a sunny, sheltered position and copes well with coastal conditions and salty air.
• Drought tolerant once established, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for modern gardens.
• Hardy throughout most of the UK, typically tolerating temperatures down to around -10°C.
• Can be grown as a specimen shrub, clipped hedge or even trained as an attractive small tree.
• Prefers free-draining soil but adapts well to most garden conditions.
• An excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, attracting pollinating insects when in flower.
• Slow to moderate growing, eventually reaching around 2–4m tall and wide if left unpruned.
