Sway Gardening Club 🌼🌻🌞
What is clear about gardening is that there is always something new to learn, and we certainly learnt plenty from Tom Maskell who gave a talk on ‘The Head Gardener’s Year’ at our monthly meeting last week.
Tom, an ex-royal marine, has RHS level 2 & 3 qualifitcations and also holds an RHS Master of Horticulture aware. For 20 years he has been head gardener at some of Hampshire’s most beautiful gardens, as well as Patrick’s Patch in Beaulieu. His talk centred on his time in these privately owned estates and his role as head gardener throughout the year – all of which can be easily translated to our own back yards! Tom has now started up his own business offering gardening consultancy, design and maintenance. He can be contacted on: www.hgshampshire.com.
It was another brilliant evening (we welcomed 6 new members) and the plant stall as ever was buzzing with activity. Thank you all as always for coming along.

WHAT A RESULT – and I’m not talking football!👏👏👏

The pennies and the pounds have all been collected, counted and recounted, and we can honestly say that SWAY OPEN GARDENS 2026 was an ABSOLUTE TRIUMPH!🤩

The event raised in total an astounding …… (🥁drum roll!🥁) ……. £16,784.00, with all profits benefitting Oakhaven Hospice! This figure dramatically exceeds all expectations particularly in view of the rather inclement weather leading up to it. Open Gardens 2024 raised £11,617.00 and we thought that was impressive! We had 250 more attendees than 2024 and some gardens reported over 700 visitors coming through their garden gates. 😮👣👣👣👣

Thank you, thank you, thank you to EVERYONE who supported Sway Open Gardens 2026. To the ticket holders, garden hosts, local businesses and sponsors, donors of plants, cakes and raffle prizes, entertainers and the many, many volunteers who all came together to make this event such a fun, memorable and successful day - the organisers are hugely grateful🙏🙏🙏. Sway residents, you should be proud of your selves!🙌👏🙌👏

Thursday, 18th June @ 7pm - Sway Village Hall

Phew! Where did June go?
Yes, it the 3rd Thursday of the month this week and that means Sway Gardening Club's regular monthly meeting.😃

This Thursday Tom Maskell, Head Gardener at Patrick's Patch, will be giving us a talk entitled 'The Head Gardener's year'. Tom is an award winning horticulturalist and we look forward to hearing all about his work and his plans for the lovely kitchen garden which is part of Fairweather's Garden Centre in Beaulieu.

The table show is one rose in bloom and as usual there will be the plant stall, refreshments and raffle. Visitor's are always welcome - entry £4 or £20 for annual membership. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Wow! That was a busy day for Sway. The weather held, and we even saw a bit of sun peeping out for Sway Open Gardens 🌞🌞.
Hundreds of visitors flocked to 18 gardens in Sway, open in support of Oakhaven Hospice , to admire a high standard of gardening expertise .
Thank you to all those who opened their gardens and all who supported the event. We hope you all had fun!

Wowee! Here is a sneaky preview of tomorrow's PLANT STALL while it was being set up this afternoon at the Youth Centre. Did I say 'stall'? Hah! It's a hall packed with amazing bargain plants of all shapes, sizes and uses. Thank you again to all the local nurseries who donated them.

Open Gardens tickets are £10 on the day available at Jubilee Fields and the Youth Centre.
The Open Garden hosts are really looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow and there is also musical entertainment and refreshments can be found at the Church Rooms. Have a fab day everyone!🥰🌼🌻🌱🪴🥀🌺🌳

Planning your route for tomorrow's Open Gardens?

DON'T FORGET that two of our NEW GARDENS are not on the shuttle bus route. So do make sure you pop along to see 2 Field Cottages, Flexford Lane, SO41 6DN (No. 3) and Eagleswood Farm House, Arnewood Bridge Road, SO41 6ER (No 10). Both offer something unique - vintage tractors at No 3 and orchids at No 10. Plant sales and picnic areas are at both, while you can also get tea, coffee and cakes at 2 Field Cottages. See more details about each of these really interesting gardens in the programme, they are definitely well worth the trip by car or bicycle🚗🚴.

Just a swift message to remind everyone that we would welcome any contributions of baked goods for the refreshment room at Sway Open Gardens on Sunday 7th June. ONE WEEK TO GO!🌺🌺🌺SWAY OPEN GARDENS🌺🌺🌺
Next Sunday promises to be such a fantastic day when the whole community come together to put on our very own verson of 'Chelsea Flower Show'!!! All in aid of Oakhaven Hospice.

While those opening gardens are probably relieved the weather is cooling down, giving our thirsty borders time to recover from the searing heat. 🌞 The Sway Gardening Club, Oakhaven Hospice and our volunteers are all beavering away putting the finishing touches to the arrangements for SWAY OPEN GARDENS.

If you haven’t got your tickets already, then make your way either to the POST OFFICE or LONDIS STORES in Sway to pick some up at the discounted price of £8.00 for advance sales (£10.00 on the day). Children are free with an accompanying adult. You can also order them on the Oakhaven website: https://www.oakhavenhospice.co.uk/sway-open-gardens and pick them up on the day at Jubilee Fields.

And just to let you in to a little secret: the Plant Stall in the Youth Centre is going to be stuffed to the gunwales with an amazing collection of shrubs and plants. 🪴🌿🌻🌾 So whether you need to plug those pesky gaps in your garden or fill the new border you have been planning, make sure you drop by. There will be a plant creche so you can leave your purchases and collect them once you have toured the gardens.

So, a HUGE THANK YOU to all the LOCAL NURSERIES who have donated and make the Plant Stall such a treasure trove of plants - all proceeds will be going to Oakhaven Hospice.
