Fellow locksmith was called to fit a new lock to a wooden door. Another so-called 'locksmith' had attended to open the door. What mess. This is why it always pays to use a local locksmith and to read the reviews before you call them. Poor bloke needs a new door now.

Another victim of the Bulgarian Fake Locksmiths. £49 quote on the phone becomes £150 on the doorstep, ‘because it was a hard job to break the lock’! No, actually it would have been easy to pick the lock open if you knew what you were doing. Fortunately the customer refused their offer of a new lock for another £200 and called me in.

Don’t get stung. If you panic, you’re more likely to make a rushed decision. Take a few moments to think. Get a quote, not an open-ended ‘If it’s a hard job we may charge more.’ With these Fake Locksmiths somehow every job turns into a hard job.

Be wary of Google. Google doesn’t recommend companies for the fun of it. They do it for money. Companies pay Google to be at the top of the page. These companies have a little ‘Ad’ before their name. It stands for advert. That advert has to be paid for. Guess who’s paying? Yes, you, the customer.

How NOT to open a door! A colleague came across this remarkable piece of work recently, done by someone who called themselves a 'locksmith'. A lady was locked out. As you can see, not only has the 'locksmith' ruined the lock and the handles, they have also scratched the door and marked the frame. They didn't even manage to get in! After an hour and a half they gave up and my colleague was called in to open the door and repair the damage. As expected, he took literally 3 minutes to gain entry, but a bit longer to replace the handles and tidy up the door as best as he could. Housing Association job, so the HA got quite a big invoice for this bodge. People, do yourselves a favour, call the professionals and save yourselves a whole dose of hassle!
