One of the things people often say when they first contact us is:
“I’m not actually sure what kind of help I need.”

Sometimes they are planning a full renovation - they already have builders involved and suddenly realise they need help making decisions before everything starts moving too quickly and sometimes it's just one room that's never felt quite right.

Very often, people sit somewhere in between. They know they want their home to feel better, more cohesive, comfortable to live in and reflective of their personalities and lifestyle.

But they are unsure whether they need full interior design, help refining a scheme, guidance with colours and finishes, or simply somebody experienced to sense-check decisions before they commit to them.

That is exactly why we offer several ways of working.

Some clients work with us across an entire house renovation from the earliest planning stages. Others come to us for Virtual Design, Design Concierge or Colour Consultancy for support with a more focused part of a project.

There is no right or wrong starting point. The important thing is finding the level of support that feels appropriate for both your home and the stage you are currently at.

To make this easier, we’ve created a Design Services Comparison Guide explaining the different ways we work with clients across Yorkshire and beyond.

You can download it here: https://www.middlethorpeinteriors.co.uk/middlethorpe-interiors-design-services-comparison-guide-2026

A few moments from our recent Spring Design Clinic at Middlethorpe Hall.

There is something incredibly helpful about seeing fabrics and wallpapers properly in person, particularly within the setting of a real home.

A wallpaper that felt far too busy online suddenly feels balanced beside a soft textured linen.
Colours that appeared flat on screen become warmer and far more interesting in natural light.
Patterns you would never have paired together somehow begin to belong once they are layered across a table.

That was very much the feeling throughout the morning.

Guests spent time exploring the new spring collections from GP & J Baker, Colefax & Fowler, Nina Campbell and Lewis & Wood, whilst talking through projects, renovations and rooms that never quite feel finished however much is added to them.

Some arrived with plans and measurements, others simply knew a room no longer felt right but couldn’t quite work out why.

Those conversations are always one of the most rewarding parts of these events. Not simply discussing fabrics, but helping people begin to understand how a home can feel more cohesive, comfortable and reflective of the way they want to live.

Middlethorpe Hall could not have been a more beautiful setting for it all.

There’s often a point during a home project where things stop feeling exciting and start feeling surprisingly difficult. Usually it begins with one decision leading to another.

The flooring suddenly changes the paint colour you thought you loved.
A fabric sample looks completely different once it’s home.
The sofa that felt perfect in the showroom somehow feels too large once the room is arranged around it.

It’s rarely because people lack ideas or taste. More often, it’s because homes are made up of layers and it becomes difficult to hold the whole picture in your head whilst making individual decisions one at a time.

That’s often the stage where people begin considering whether they might need some professional help.

Not to make a home feel overly “designed”, but simply to help everything sit together properly and feel the way they hoped it would.

The homes that feel effortless are usually the result of careful planning long before the finishing touches arrive.

We’ve written a new journal article exploring when to involve an interior designer during a renovation or home project, and why earlier conversations can make such a difference to the overall result.

Sometimes you just know a room isn’t working, even if you can’t quite put your finger on why. It’s often not one big problem, just a series of small things that don’t quite sit right.

A room that never feels finished, however much you add to it.
Colours that don’t quite settle together.
Pieces you’ve chosen individually, but that don’t seem to belong as a whole.
Or simply a sense that the space isn’t giving back what you hoped it would.

That’s usually the point where things start to feel unclear.

Choosing fabrics and wallpapers isn’t about picking something you like in isolation, it’s about seeing how things relate to one another, how they sit in the light, and how a room begins to take shape when everything starts to connect.

That’s really what this morning at Middlethorpe Hall is about.

We’ll have the new spring collections there, but more importantly, the time and space to look at things properly, to move them around, ask questions and start to see what might work in your own home.

It’s a small group, very relaxed, and you’re very welcome to bring photos or ideas if you’ve been trying to work something out. It’s also a very lovely morning to come along with a friend.

We have a few places left for 30 April, and it would be lovely to see you there.

A sense of character, colour and something a little unexpected.

One of the highlights we'll be sharing at our Spring Design Clinic will be the latest collaboration between GP & J Baker and Kit Kemp - a collection that feels both joyful and considered in equal measure.

Layered patterns, expressive prints, and thoughtful detailing come together in a way that brings personality into a space without overwhelming it.

It’s a collection that invites you to be a little braver with pattern, while still creating rooms that feel comfortable, balanced and entirely your own.

This is a collection that deserves to be seen - join us at Middlethorpe Hall on 30 April to see it for yourself.

Come and take a closer look at Colefax & Fowler this spring.

A collection that feels both rooted and relaxed - drawing on traditional techniques, but with a lightness that sits easily in a modern home.

Pattern that doesn’t overwhelm.
Texture that invites you to come closer.
Colour that shifts gently in natural light.

From the expressive detail of Olander to the softness of Naturals IV and the structure of Silvano Stripes, each piece has been designed to be lived with, not just admired.

The detail, the weight, the way the colour sits - it’s something you only fully appreciate in person.

We’ll be sharing the collection at our Spring Design Clinic at Middlethorpe Hall on 30 April - a chance to see, feel and consider how these fabrics might come to sit in your own home.

With a small number of places remaining don't forget to reserve your place here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1986535133059?aff=oddtdtcreator

A moment to step into spring.

We are inviting a small number of guests to join us at Middlethorpe Hall in York on Thursday 30 April at 10am for our Spring Design Clinic - a relaxing morning and opportunity to spend time with the new collections as they are intended to be experienced.

To see colour in natural light.
To feel the weight and texture of cloth.
To notice the detail in pattern, and consider how it might come to sit within your own home.

Throughout the morning, representatives from Colefax & Fowler, Nina Campbell and GP & J Baker will be joining us to share the inspiration behind their latest collections, including the new Kit Kemp collaboration. Ann will also present the Lewis & Wood spring launch.

Tickets are £15 per person, including refreshments, a goody bag, and are fully redeemable against future purchases within six months.

With places intentionally limited, we now have a small number remaining.

Reserve your place here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1986535133059?aff=oddtdtcreator

Interior design is never a solo act.

Behind every project is a network of talented craftspeople, makers, suppliers and business owners, many of them brilliant women building thoughtful, creative businesses of their own.

Today we’re celebrating just a few of the female-owned businesses we’re lucky to work alongside and admire.
Thank you for the skill, creativity and collaboration you bring to every project.

Special mention to Rachel Usher who never fails to inspire with her commitment to our design industry, always encouraging community and the sharing of experience to make the industry better.

There’s a perception that you only work with an interior designer when you’re embarking on a full-scale renovation.

The whole house.
Walls down.
Months of drawings and decisions.

And yes - we love these projects.
Guiding a project from first concept and spatial planning through to that final cushion chop. There is something incredibly special about shaping a home in its entirety.

But you don’t have to be renovating everything to work with us.

Some of our clients have been with us for years.
One room at a time.
Every year, or every couple of years.

Perhaps it’s a sitting room -
softly lit, somewhere to properly exhale at the end of the day.

A master bedroom suite -
calm, layered, deeply restful.

Or a kitchen refresh -
where mornings feel lighter and weekends gather naturally around the island.

Layer by layer, their homes evolve. And each space carries the same thoughtfulness and quiet confidence as a larger project. You don’t have to do everything at once to create a room that gives you joy every time you step into it.

And if even that feels like too much…

Maybe you’ve been staring at paint charts for weeks.
Or you’re ready to do it yourselves but just need clarity on where to begin.

That’s why we offer Virtual Design, Colour Consultancy and Design Concierge — for when you need direction, reassurance, or simply a professional eye before you commit.

Big transformation.
One beautiful room.
Or just a little guidance.

You don’t have to wait for the “big renovation” chapter.
You can begin wherever you are

As an Interior Designer in Yorkshire, we’re often asked: do you really need one?

That depends how much risk you’re prepared to take.

Because most costly mistakes don’t start dramatically.
They creep in. Quietly. Expensively.

Here’s what we stop before it becomes a problem:

Moving electrics twice.
Planning once…properly…protects both budget and walls.

Furniture that won’t fit.
Scale and flow are resolved before anything is ordered.

Delayed trades.
Clear decisions keep timelines moving and costs controlled.

Disconnected finishes.
Cohesion is designed from the outset, not assembled later.

Budget drift.
Strategic allocation avoids the “while we’re here” spiral.

Design isn’t simply about how a space looks.

It’s about giving our clients peace of mind
knowing decisions are considered,
costs are controlled,
and the finished result feels effortless.

We support renovation projects across Yorkshire, helping clients avoid costly design mistakes before they happen. Because beautiful homes are very rarely accidental.
