🔐 “The Abandoned Outpost!” This is a project I’ve just finished in Tamworth — totally unique, quirky, industrial, and definitely a "love it or hate it" design. 🖤
🪚 I took this steep, awkward grass bank back to a total blank canvas, to design and build an immersive, post-industrial sanctuary from scratch. The goal was simple: tell a story of "beauty in imperfection," where human history and heavy machinery have been slowly conquered and reclaimed by nature.
Every single structural and decorative element was hand-sourced, customized, and built on-site:
⛓️💥 The Heavy Gantry & Winch: Built from massive, original 12-inch round telegraph poles and heavy vertical original railway sleepers. We hand-notched the joints and bound them with thick, weathered marine rope to support a genuine, vintage 1/4-ton Herbert Morris cast-iron chain hoist.
🚗 The Sunk Land Rover Discovery: A satin-black real Land Rover Discovery 3 front end, cut down and buried at an aggressive 45-degree angle. I treated the panels with a reactive rusting catalyst so the steel oxidizes naturally in the rain. A totally “out there” idea, creating the visual effect of a vehicle buried deep in the earth and being winched out!
🐉 The Dungeon Vault Gate: A solid oak cottage door, aggressively wire-brushed to raise the natural grain, then heavily charred using a blowtorch to a smoky silver-black finish. We blacked out the leaded glass window from behind to create a deep, dark void, and barricaded it with raw, rusty steel rebar.
💧 The Water Station: A salvaged, heritage-green cast-iron water pump mounted on a matching charred sleeper post, raised up on a natural soil-and-rock wellhead.
🛕 The Lost Relics: An original, rusty Snap-on cantilever toolbox and heavy vintage Shell petrol cans nestled directly into the stone drifts.
🌱 The Ground Plane & Planting: High-contrast red ballast and smooth Scottish pebbles framed with light limestone drifts — tying the new area seamlessly into last year’s barrel-and-sandstone build. We softened the heavy steel and timber with a premium, drought-tolerant Mediterranean and Alpine plant palette: silver olive trees, architectural palms, lavender, and vibrant creeping phlox cascading over the rock corners.
🪵 The Barrier: The whole area is enclosed using robust ranch-style fencing, framing the entire scene perfectly.
✨ No catalogs. No AI, No copy-and-pasting. Just raw, honest materials, original ideas hard physical graft, and a garden with actual soul. ✨
This garden is so unique — you literally won’t find another like it anywhere.
Half of the area was completed last year, and the customer was so happy they called me back this year to complete the rest. Given free rein and trusted to produce ideas that were totally original… they were absolutely over the moon with the result. 🤝
For all your outdoor needs… and literally anything you want done with your garden — drop me a message! The possibilities are endless!
