2009 RangeRover Sport

On this occasion it was all the standard nuts causing a problem, with 17 years of weather and mileage combined, the wheel nuts ended up in a rather tumescent state, so a 22mm socket wouldn’t fit over them. If you ever see these nuts with the tell tale sign someone has needed to drive them back out the socket showing the dent like in pic 2. The best thing to do is replace them all

Was nothing wrong with the locking wheel nuts at this moment in time, but did away with them to prevent any future problems. Tyre fitters are happy too because their job will be nice and easy.

Still gathering a few more together for the new cover pic of wheel nuts on parade 🤣🙈

No significantly interesting or severely damaged wheel nut pics taken this week. So I thought I’d put some together of another manufacturer. This is a quarter of a centuries (most) designs used by Ford and what they’ve all got in common is they’re made by McGard which is a German company whose been producing locking wheel nuts since 1977 and they also produce them for Mazda, Honda, BMW, modern Toyota, some Nissan, some older JLR, Chrisler, Older Volvo, Mitsubishi, and more I can’t think of off the top of my head at the moment.

‼️Will be new pinned post coming soon‼️ 😃
As the current one is way out dated and 9 years old, a nice new one is way overdue

In the meantime, I’ve been gathering a collection of different locking wheel nuts and bolts together I thought PSA (Citroen & Peugeot)
are such a common one I come across I’d put their entire design evolution together as a post of its own. With the exception of two different platform ones not in this picture this is over 40 years of their run of the mill designs from the mid 1980’s right through to 2026 !

Going left to right in approximate* years of production
• 1985 - late 90’s
• Late 90’s - about 2002
• 2002 - 2006
• 2006 - 2012 (some rare cases found on late 2011)
• 2012-2022
• 2022-2025
• 2025 - present.

Ford transit custom locking wheel nut removal from yesterday. Id say maybe 7/10 of these jobs are due to a rounded off key, and this design is the predecessor to the ones shown a few posts down which I said were better. They were right to phase this design out. When you consider these factors for design flaws.
• High torque setting - which it needs to be
• Exposed thread which is open to the elements so it can corrode just like any other nut or bolt on the vehicle and considering they are a commercial vehicle often used on building sites etc
• Soft metal key with 5 or 6 prongs that can either fold over and round off, or the tubular part can collapse inwards on itself if they get stuck and increasing pressure is applied to try and undo it. If they’re stuck, they’re stuck and this will happen no matter what mechanic or tyre fitter comes across it - so they’re not necessarily guilty of any blame when this happens unless they’re using an impact gun

All removed and replaced with standard 21mm nuts of which are genuine parts.

One of its locking wheel bolts had been worked on in the past so it was just flat metal down the hole. Removed this damaged one plus the other 3 and refitted 4 standard bolts which are genuine parts 👌

2024 RangeRover with lost locking wheel nut key. Customer supplied their own replacement locking wheel bolts, yes bolts ! The newer ones have done away with the studs and 22mm nuts that swell up and become a pain for tyre fitters and mechanics 👨‍🔧 they now have 19mm headed bolts of a similar specification that you’d find fitted to some Volvos and these spinning centre type lockers are far more reliable than any other design they’ve used in the past. There’s now several manufacturers changing over to this design.

You’ll also notice the location of the locking wheel bolt has moved in the second picture, it’s next to the valve in the direction of rotation of the vehicle moving forward, this is just something I’ve done for many years which goes back to the days I was a young apprentice at a Ford main dealer. It was actually a great system for knowing if the wheels had been off it since we touched it in the event of comebacks and is a case of old habits die hard. I’ve even suggested this to some of my trade customers who have suffered flak off people saying “YoU wErE tHe LaSt OnEs To tOuCh It” as sadly many garages get wrongly blamed for locking wheel nut/bolt problems 🤦🏻‍♂️

Interesting challenge for the last job of this week with a 2015 RangeRover Sport.

In some rare circumstances on Landrovers it’s possible for the wheel nuts to absolutely fuse themselves solid to the wheel through steel to alloy corrosion where the shank of the nut contacts the very inside part surrounding the stud, when this has truly taken hold they can become that obstinate that the only option left is welding for the localised heat to help break the bond and high torque from a large breaker bar to remove them. No amount of skills, trickery or specialist tools will touch them once they end up like this, you’re fighting against both the laws of physics and chemistry put together 😆
As this is not the first and safe to say it’s not the last, I know exactly how to go about approaching and solving this problem although it’s quite a long winded job with most time spent in the preparation and taking precautions not to damage anything.

First signs of this is usually the key slips over the nut and rounds all the base off where the lugs locate into it as indicated in the third picture. And at this point it’s unknown how stuck they are until you start working on them. Which is why when someone makes an enquiry about experiencing this problem I have to ask them a series of questions to try and ascertain the likelihood that this could be the case. As it stands I can usually still count on one hand how many of these I have to weld each year, but I feel that it will increase due to there being plenty of them on the road gaining more age and mileage.

Simple lost key job. All removed and replaced with standard nuts, of which are genuine Ford parts

This type is a decent design in my opinion. When tightened correctly these give many years of reliable use. I can’t see Ford totally phasing these out any time soon, they’ve currently been in production since 2013 I believe

..And the last job to wrap up a busy week with May bank holiday looming. 2020 reg Jaguar iPace electric car 🚙 with the spinning centre design locking wheel nuts removed. And in this instance the customer supplied his own replacement locking wheel nuts which are not OEM but of sturdy quality.
