Look at this! A fungus I’ve never seen before growing in my flower garden. I believe it’s a Black Morel, what a strange but wonderful looking thing. At first glance I thought it was a toad!

Peas, cosmos and carrots…
I’m a little behind on sowing certain varieties, but hayho, things will catch up. The warm weather recently tricks you into thinking it’s safe to start.
This season I’m trying out the clear plastic containers as my greenhouse/cold-frame, together with the strip of plastic rolled up with soil. And, I must say I’m very impressed.
Less plastic, less starter soil, space saving and easier pricking out. Win win.
I’ve also direct sown a few things… a nerve wracking wait to see if they appear.

I’m growing a bit of veg this year too. Potatoes, carrots and peas. Looking at companion planting, I’ve cheated and pre bought french marigolds but I have direct sown some nasturtiums. I’ll add chives, sage and perhaps a flower in between.

The beds are in their first real year of growing and some will be planted with a green crop just to keep the soil conditioned.

It’s a huge learning curve this year.
I can’t help but miss my old garden sometimes, especially when I can’t find things!

Did you know that the heart of a forget-me-not is yellow. This is the pollen and once it’s been gathered by a bee it turns white ❤️

I’ve started the raised beds 😀and I can’t tell you how happy this makes me! I thought I’d try the raised metal beds, these are from Blumfeldt. To fill each one I’m putting a thick layer of cardboard, followed by small offcuts of wood and thin branches. After this will be grass cuttings and all the kitchen veg scraps, then the soil. Each bed will need a top up each year as the wood rots down and nature takes over…. I’ve six of these beds to do! I’m hoping to plant mid to late summer, fingers crossed… it’s so good to be in the garden again!

Walking around the garden in the drizzle today, I came across a few things I wish I’d known before I introduced them to the beds.

Sweet Rocket - a beautiful white or purple flower, full of bounce and fanfare. Let it go to seed and it spreads like anything! It’s currently all over my garden.
Ox Eye Daisy - a favourite flower of mine, but my word it spreads!
Fennel - the smell is intoxicating I love it! But the roots go straight down…. Deep!

Now possibly if you were to cut them back before seeding it may go a little better, but I love the seed heads of these plants.
This year I’m cutting back!

Bed clearing…

I’m a little late to this as the new house took over my time. But the old plants protected the soil and new growth underneath, so I suppose it’s a win win.
It’s difficult putting time pressures on yourself in any aspect of life and I’ve learnt that those pressures can take away any pleasure of the task in hand… so this year it’s about savouring moments in the garden.

For the past few years I’ve allowed self seeding in my flower beds and last year I found myself with very little space for the plants I grew in the poly tunnel. This year I’m ripping out! If I didn’t plant it, it’s out (although I usually take it home and plant in the garden! Im terrible still and throwing on the compost)

It’s great gardening weather today.. 🌸

They shouldn’t be out just yet, but here’s an identification picture for you… let’s be kind to them ❤️

Christmas Eve morning…
What a journey this year has been! The heat, house move to a renovation project, caravan life, the rains and most recently the freeze. Then there’s the cost of everything!

I’ve missed the garden due to the house move and I can certainly see the garden has missed me. But I have my autumn plants coming along nicely, it just means I have a fair amount of work to do in early spring getting the beds ready.
Leaving the beds this year has allowed the birds to forage, insects to galavant and protect the soil.

Thank you to everyone that has supported the garden this year, knowing my flowers are being enjoyed in your home, warms my heart.

Wishing you a really peaceful Christmas and a new year filled with special people

✨🥂✨
