You may not be aware, but a lot of homes have TRV's. This is short for Thermostatic Radiator Valves. These control individual room temperatures.
Most people have them set to 5 or maximum. It's not necessary. Make the TRV's work for you.
Example, you have a 2 bedroom house with a kitchen/dining room and a living room.
Set the TRV's as below
Kitchen/dining room (2)
Living room setting (4/5)
Bedrooms (3)
A room that's not used or used infrequently, set that to 1, it'll keep the chill off.
Remember, heat rises, so downstairs heat will travel upstairs. You can also change the settings of your thermostatic radiator valves with a turn of the valve top.
So in a nutshell, this is about balancing your heating system, it ensures that all rooms are equally as warm the next and that you don't waste money.
This a very loose guide to the process (there's more to adjust) , but I hope it helps.
