Another valuable CPD session completed by the team at Madeley, this time presented by Russell Wallbank at Siderise Group on Passive Fire Protection in Curtain Wall Facades.

The presentation provided an excellent overview of the critical role passive fire protection plays within curtain wall systems, including fire stopping strategies, compartmentation requirements, cavity barriers, and the importance of maintaining the fire performance of the building envelope throughout the design and construction process.

As façade designers and engineers, it is essential that we continue to develop our understanding of fire safety principles, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices to help deliver safe, compliant, and robust façade solutions.

We recently welcomed Russell Wallbank from Siderise for a CPD session on cavity barriers in masonry external wall constructions.

The session provided a clear and practical overview of how cavity barriers should be specified and detailed within masonry façades to ensure effective compartmentation. Key topics included the correct positioning of horizontal and vertical cavity barriers, interfaces with floor slabs and openings, and maintaining continuity to prevent the passage of fire and smoke.

Particular emphasis was placed on compliance with Approved Document B and current industry guidance, highlighting the importance of robust detailing and coordination between design and site installation to achieve compliant and buildable solutions.

Thank you to Declan McMahon and Siderise Group for delivering a highly informative CPD session on cavity barriers in ventilated façades.
The presentation provided a detailed overview of the design intent, application, and performance of vertical linear joint seals and horizontal ‘open state’ cavity barriers within rainscreen cladding systems. It reinforced the importance of achieving the correct balance between maintaining required cavity ventilation and ensuring effective compartmentation to limit fire spread.
The session also explored how Siderise systems are integrated within façade build-ups, including correct positioning, continuity, and installation considerations to achieve compliant and robust solutions. Particular focus was given to how these products align with current regulatory requirements and recognised industry guidance, supported by appropriate testing standards and performance criteria.
As façade design continues to evolve alongside the requirements of the Building Safety Act and associated regulations, maintaining a clear understanding of compliant fire-stopping strategies within ventilated façades remains essential.

National Apprenticeship Week is a reminder that the future of our industry depends on the talent we develop today. Apprentices bring fresh thinking, enthusiasm, a strong desire to learn and by supporting them, we help build a stronger, more resilient construction sector.

We’re proud to support Carter, who is currently training to become a Project Designer. Watching skills develop through real project experience is exactly what apprenticeships are about, and we look forward to being part of that journey.

Carter shares his experience so far:
“So far I’ve learnt how to use AutoCAD and Revit for design, and I’ve gained knowledge about curtain wall and rainscreen cladding systems. I’m currently completing a BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment, which has helped me understand how the theory links directly to what I’m learning at work. I’ve really enjoyed the experience so far, especially seeing how everything comes together in real buildings and how designs are brought to life in practice. My mentors are very supportive and always take the time to guide and educate me on the design process, different building systems, materials, and industry guidance.”
