Why we set up The Kit Foundation:

Kit is the fond nickname for our sister Kay, she was funny, clever, and kind, she lived for her boys and loved family times, Christmas was her absolute favorite time of year and she loved spending time with us at her parents caravan in Wales.

Kay was diagnosed at only 39 with stage 3 breast cancer over Christmas 2016, when her sons who were only 4 and 9 months. After starting chemo in January 2017, she became very weak, so we took over the full time care of our smallest nephew, while Kays parents shared care with us of her eldest son and looked after their daughter. As Kay's illness progressed we stayed strong as a family and did everything we could to ensure our children and our nephews were as unaffected as possible, they never missed a school day or party and regularly saw their Mum. We took Kay to all of her hospital appointments, check ups and collected her prescriptions, supporting her through the awful times when she was scared and hurting, while trying to make special memories on the good days. After a mastectomy, herceptin injections and radiotherapy we were all elated when Kay was given a clean bill of health in Nov 2019 and we watched as she started to enjoy life again, preparing for reconstructive surgery and embracing her new hair which had regrown through with beautiful curls!

Kay had a few pains behind her eye and we took her to the opticians, they immediately referred her to a specialist. We will never forget the saddest day, Valentines day 14th Feb 2020 when our lives truly fell apart as she was told the cancer had not only returned, but had spread and was now terminal. Starting palliative care was not really an option because Kay wanted to spend quality time with her boys. We researched and found a clinic in Spain who could offer an alternative treatment (dendritic cell therapy) including a specialized diet, but it came at a cost. The immediate family scraped together and Kay sold her car, but the price was worth it because it gave her hope. During this time the Covid19 pandemic also hit the UK and lockdown meant that many of Kays friends could only see her over the internet.

We were trying to raise funds for more treatment when Kay sadly lost her battle on 28th May 2020. With the permission of donators money leftover from the treatment was used to start the kit foundation.

Organising the funeral and headstone was heart breaking but we tried to make everything perfect for beautiful Kay.

As a family we have experienced the overwhelming emotional strain of watching someone you adore go through treatment, along with the financial implications of dealing with the disease while trying to keep everything as 'normal' as possible, but we came across such kindness from people and we wanted to start something positive in Kays honour, The Kit Foundation has been set up in the hope that we can offer families in similar situations a little support.
