Our annual beanpole sales campaign is now in full swing. The big event is over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of April 10th- 12th, from 10am - 4pm in the main car park at Westonbirt Arboretum (where we are managing the coppice). This is in conjunction with our Spring Coppice Market where we'll be gathering a range of local craftspeople to demonstrate and sell at the end of the Treetop Walkway. We're also in the car park every Thursday until the end of April from 10am - 2pm. Peasticks, canes, charcoal and other coppice-products will be available on all these days.

A shout out to all gardeners and allotmenteers!

We've been busy beavering away through a very wet winter to prepare our hazel coppiced plant supports, which are produced as part of, and support our coppice restoration work in the Arboretum.

We will be selling our hazel beanpoles and pea sticks from the arboretum car park (by the Welcome building) every Thursday in March and April between 10am-2pm, and Fri/Sat/Sun 10/11/12 April 10am-4pm.

No pre-order necessary, please just drive up!

Please get in touch if you have any special hazel or other requests. Purchase and collection from sites in Stroud, Bathford and Gloucester upon arrangement.

Barbecue charcoal made from sustainable coppiced hard wood here at the arboretum also available to buy.

After a run of cleft oak work (photos to follow) we're back into the hazel with stakes and binders beginning to come out for a variety of orders. Hurdling rods starting to come together nicely too.

Shrouded oak? In common with many woods we suffer from Pin-hole Borer in our recently felled oak. This gets into the sapwood in the first year and then proceeds down into the heartwood in subsequent years, potentially ruining the timber. So we've tried wrapping some logs in plastic sheeting as soon as they're felled to try and keep thee flying beetle off. We tried it on two logs early on and it seems to have worked. On a couple of other logs it hasn't worked but on these the covering went on a bit late and the beetle was probably already flying. So worth perservering with.

We took a trip up to the Cotswold's Hedgelaying Competition yesterday. There must have been about forty competitors beavering away on a very nice stretch of hedge (new planting; never been flailed). We've only just started cutting and so our first stakes and binders aren't going out until next week, but we should have a good supply thereafter.
